New Delhi: The Indian Air Force air defence systems modernisation plan has received an important boost after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approved proposals for new air defence equipment, weapons and Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radar Systems on October 26, 2026.

The approvals aim to improve India’s air defence capabilities, combat readiness and flight safety. The decision is part of a larger defence procurement package worth approximately ₹2.12 lakh crore, with around 82% of the proposed procurement expected to come from Indian industry.

Defence Acquisition Council Approves New Equipment For The IAF

The Defence Acquisition Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) to several defence procurement proposals for the Indian armed forces.

For the Indian Air Force, the approvals cover helicopters, air defence systems, weapons and Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radar Systems. These systems are intended to strengthen the IAF’s ability to protect important military assets and conduct operations in different weather and geographical conditions. However, the AoN is an in-principle approval to proceed with procurement. It does not mean that all the equipment has already been purchased, delivered or deployed.

How New Indian Air Force Air Defence Systems Will Strengthen India’s Security

Better Protection Against Aerial Threats

Modern air defence systems help detect, track and respond to threats approaching from the air. These threats may include hostile aircraft, drones and certain incoming weapons, depending on the capabilities of the selected systems.

The planned acquisitions are expected to improve the protection of important airbases, military installations and strategic infrastructure. Stronger air defence can also help the armed forces respond more effectively to changing security challenges.

Improved Combat Readiness

Advanced weapons can provide the Indian Air Force with more options during defensive and offensive missions. They can help improve operational flexibility and support faster responses when security situations change.

The exact weapon types, quantities, suppliers and delivery schedules were not specified in the official announcement. Therefore, further procurement details will be needed to understand the full operational impact.

Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radars To Support IAF Operations

Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radars are systems designed to monitor local weather conditions. They can provide detailed information about rainfall, storms and other atmospheric activity in the areas they cover.

The Indian Air Force plans to use these radars to improve weather surveillance, particularly in forward areas where reliable local weather information is important for military operations.

Why Are Weather Radars Important For The Air Force

Weather conditions can affect aircraft movement, take-off and landing, visibility, flight routes and mission planning. Accurate weather information helps pilots and operational teams make better decisions.

Mobile radar systems can also be moved to locations where weather monitoring is required. This flexibility may help the IAF support operations and exercises in different geographical regions.

How The Indian Air Force Air Defence Systems Could Benefit

The proposed acquisitions are expected to support the IAF in several important areas:

  • Air Defence: Better protection against relevant aerial threats.
  • Combat Capability: Additional weapons and improved operational flexibility.
  • Flight Safety: More detailed local weather information for flight planning.
  • Operational Readiness: Better preparation for missions in different environments.
  • Flexible Deployment: Mobile weather radars that can be positioned where needed.

The overall benefits will depend on the equipment selected, its performance, integration with existing systems, and the time required to bring it into service.
