New Delhi: The Pinaka rocket system is now at the center of India’s artillery modernisation push. In a major move aligned with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, the army is prioritising the indigenous Pinaka Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) over procuring new 122mm unguided rockets for ageing Soviet-era Grad systems.

This shift highlights India’s growing focus on self-reliance in defence production, improved firepower, and reduced dependence on foreign military imports.

What is the Pinaka Rocket System?

The Pinaka MBRL is an advanced rocket artillery system developed in India to deliver rapid, high-volume firepower across large areas with improved accuracy.

What are the Features of the Pinaka Rocket System

  • Range: 40 km (Mk-I), up to 75+ km (guided variants)
  • High mobility and quick deployment
  • Ability to fire multiple rockets in seconds
  • Modern fire control and navigation systems

It has already been inducted into several artillery regiments and continues to expand.

Why is India Replacing Russian Grad Systems?

The Indian Army has relied on Soviet-origin BM-21 Grad rocket systems for decades. However, these platforms are now outdated and less effective in modern warfare.

Key Issues with Grad Systems:

  • Shorter range compared to newer systems
  • Lower accuracy
  • High maintenance due to ageing hardware
  • Dependence on imported ammunition
  • No advanced guidance capabilities

Instead of upgrading or replacing them with similar 122mm rockets, the army is moving toward a more advanced indigenous solution.

Why Pinaka Rocket System is the Preferred Choice

1. Strong Push for Self-Reliance

Pinaka supports domestic defence manufacturing and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers.

2. Superior Performance

  • Longer strike range
  • Better accuracy, especially with guided rockets
  • Faster response time on the battlefield

3. Cost Efficiency Over Time

Indigenous production lowers long-term costs and ensures reliable supply chains during conflicts.

4. Future-Ready System

Pinaka is designed with scalability in mind, allowing upgrades like:

  • Guided rocket systems
  • Enhanced targeting technologies
  • Integration with modern battlefield networks

Procurement Strategy and Expansion

Recent defence developments indicate that the army is:

  • Increasing the number of Pinaka regiments
  • Ordering more advanced and guided rocket variants
  • Gradually phasing out older Grad systems

Large-scale production is being supported by both public and private sector defence manufacturers in India.

What is the Importance of Pinaka Rocket System Over Grad Systems

Improved Border Defence

Pinaka’s mobility and range make it highly effective in sensitive regions, including mountainous terrain and forward positions.

Modern Warfare Capability

The system supports:

  • Quick deployment
  • High-volume firepower
  • Integration with surveillance and targeting systems

Export Potential

India is also exploring exports of Pinaka, which could strengthen its global defence footprint.
