Indian Army Unveils Indigenous Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel That Performs at -42°C

The Indian Army has launched indigenous Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel, capable of operating at -42°C, improving military mobility and benefiting civilians in high-altitude regions.
Indian Masterminds Stories

New Delhi: The Indian Army has taken a major step towards strengthening operational readiness in extreme weather conditions with the launch of an indigenously developed Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel, capable of functioning at temperatures as low as minus 42°C. Developed jointly by the Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), the specialised fuel is expected to improve the mobility, reliability and safety of military vehicles deployed in high-altitude and snow-bound regions.

The fuel was launched by Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth in New Delhi on Thursday. Besides supporting military operations, the technology is also expected to benefit civilian transport and equipment operating in harsh winter conditions, marking another milestone under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Designed for India’s Toughest Terrains

Unlike conventional diesel, which thickens and clogs fuel filters in freezing temperatures, XWG Diesel remains effective even at -42°C. This ensures uninterrupted performance of combat and logistics vehicles in some of the world’s most challenging operational environments.

A key advantage is that the fuel can be used in the Army’s existing vehicle fleet without requiring:

  • Engine modifications
  • Vehicle re-homologation
  • Changes to existing fuel systems

The fuel complies with BS-VI emission norms and IS 1460:2025 standards.

Boost to Military Readiness

Speaking at the launch, General Dhiraj Seth described the fuel as a game-changing indigenous innovation that will strengthen operational mobility and mission reliability in extreme climatic conditions. According to the Army, the new fuel will reduce the need for temporary practices traditionally used to keep vehicles operational during severe winters.

This is expected to improve:

  • Operational readiness
  • Vehicle reliability
  • Personnel safety
  • Troop morale

The Army also acknowledged the contribution of Oil Marketing Companies in developing the specialised fuel within a year. Benefits Beyond Defence

Benefits Beyond Defence

While developed primarily for military operations, the technology has significant civilian applications.

The specialised diesel can improve the reliability of:

  • Vehicles operating in Himalayan and high-altitude regions
  • Emergency response vehicles
  • Construction and infrastructure equipment
  • Transport services in snow-bound areas

Its ability to function in sub-zero temperatures could make transportation safer and more dependable during harsh winters.

Supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat

The launch of XWG Diesel reflects India’s growing focus on indigenous defence technologies and self-reliance. By developing specialised fuel within the country, India is reducing dependence on imported technologies while strengthening defence preparedness and encouraging innovation in the energy sector.

The initiative also highlights how defence research can generate technologies with wider civilian benefits, particularly for people living and working in extreme weather conditions.

As India continues to modernise its armed forces, innovations such as XWG Diesel demonstrate how indigenous research can enhance national security while supporting transportation, infrastructure and public safety in some of the country’s toughest terrains.
