A court in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district has sentenced nine convicts to 10 years of imprisonment each in the murder case of Rajesh Yadav, father of IPS officer Bajrang Prasad Yadav. The verdict, delivered nearly six years after the crime, marks the end of a long legal battle for a family that endured unimaginable loss while pursuing justice.
For IPS Bajrang Prasad, the judgement is more than a legal outcome. It is the culmination of a painful chapter that began in August 2020 when his father was murdered in a village dispute. Soon after the verdict, Bajrang posted just two words on social media – “Satyamev Jayate” – along with a photograph of his father. The message reflected both relief and faith in the justice system.
Father Murdered Amid Village Rivalry
Rajesh Yadav, a farmer from Dhobghat village in the Kalwari area of Basti district, was known locally for standing up for the poor and opposing influential elements in the village. According to reports, on August 9, 2020, he was murdered by a group of villagers following a conspiracy linked to local disputes.
The loss devastated the family. At the time, Bajrang Prasad was in Delhi preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. He was still struggling to establish himself as a serious aspirant, balancing limited resources and immense expectations.
The tragedy could have ended his dream. Instead, it strengthened his resolve.
A Mother’s Strength During the Darkest Hour
One of the most emotional aspects of Bajrang’s story is the role played by his mother, Kusumlata, who has served as the Gram Pradhan of Dhobghat village.
She took a difficult decision after Rajesh Yadav’s death. Concerned that the shock and grief might derail her son’s UPSC preparation, she reportedly advised him not to interrupt his studies. The family believed that fulfilling his father’s dream would be the greatest tribute he could offer.
For any aspirant, losing a parent during preparation can be emotionally crushing. For Bajrang, the challenge was even greater because the person he lost was also his biggest supporter.
Inspired by His Father’s Vision
Bajrang Prasad’s journey began in the rural landscape of eastern Uttar Pradesh. His early education took place in his village school before he moved ahead in pursuit of higher studies.
His father often spoke about government officers who solved people’s problems and brought change to society. Those stories left a lasting impression on young Bajrang and gradually shaped his career aspirations.
He completed his graduation in Mathematics and Physics from Allahabad University and later shifted to Delhi for UPSC preparation. Despite coming from a farming family, he received unwavering support from his father, who ensured that financial constraints did not become a barrier to his son’s ambitions.
Bajrang has credited his father for nurturing his sense of public service and social responsibility.
The UPSC Journey Filled With Setbacks
Like many successful civil servants, Bajrang’s path was not without failures.
In his first attempt, he cleared the Preliminary Examination but could not make it through the Mains stage. The disappointment was significant, but he remained confident that success was within reach.
The following year brought another setback. He missed clearing the Preliminary Examination by a narrow margin. At a time when many aspirants would have considered quitting, Bajrang chose persistence.
The period was particularly difficult because he was dealing with personal grief alongside academic pressure. Apart from losing his father, he also suffered the loss of other close family members within a short span.
Yet he continued preparing, convinced that perseverance would eventually yield results.
Success In The Third Attempt
The breakthrough finally came in the Civil Services Examination 2023, when Bajrang Prasad secured All India Rank 454 and earned a place in the Indian Police Service.
For the young officer, the achievement was both joyful and emotional. It fulfilled a dream that he and his father had shared for years. While his father was not present to witness the success, the accomplishment stood as a tribute to his sacrifices and guidance.
Conviction Under ‘Operation Conviction’
The recent judgement in the Rajesh Yadav murder case was secured under Uttar Pradesh Police’s ‘Operation Conviction’ initiative, which focuses on strengthening investigations and ensuring effective prosecution in serious criminal cases.
Police officials stated that coordinated efforts between investigators and prosecutors helped secure the conviction of all nine accused. The verdict demonstrates the importance of sustained legal follow-up in serious criminal cases and reinforces public confidence in the justice system.
A Story Beyond Success
Bajrang Prasad’s journey is not merely a story about clearing the UPSC examination. It is about a son carrying forward his father’s dream despite devastating personal loss. It is about a mother who transformed grief into determination. And it is about the belief that setbacks, however painful, do not define a person’s future.
Six years after the murder that changed his life forever, Bajrang Prasad witnessed a moment that many families spend years waiting for—justice. His simple message, “Satyamev Jayate,” captured the significance of that moment.
From a small village in Basti to the ranks of the Indian Police Service, his story stands as a reminder that perseverance, family values, and faith in justice can overcome even the most difficult circumstances.
