ITBP DIG Parminder Singh, 48, and his driver Ravi Shankar, 35, were killed in a road accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur district on Saturday morning. The accident took place on the Dehradun-Panchkula National Highway near Jhabiran Cut under the Sarsawa police station area.
Parminder Singh, a native of Rupnagar (Ropar) in Punjab, was posted in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He was travelling from Mussoorie to Ambala after completing a training programme. His gunner, Jairam, 36, was also in the vehicle.
Scorpio Crossed Divider, Hit Swift
According to police, the Scorpio carrying the ITBP DIG lost control while travelling on the highway. The vehicle hit the divider, bounced across it and entered the opposite lane.
It then collided head-on with a Swift Dzire travelling towards Haridwar.
The collision was severe, leaving both vehicles badly damaged. The front portion of the Scorpio was completely crushed, while the Swift also suffered major damage. The occupants became trapped inside the vehicles following the impact.
Local residents reached the spot and informed the police. A police team rescued the injured and shifted them to a nearby hospital by ambulance.
Driver Also Dies, Gunner Seriously Injured
Doctors at Saharanpur Government Medical College declared Parminder Singh and his driver Ravi Shankar dead on arrival.
The DIG’s gunner, Jairam, suffered injuries and remains under treatment. He is a resident of Patiala.
Three occupants of the Swift Dzire were also injured.
Police Investigating Cause of Crash
Saharanpur SP Shailendra Srivastava said the initial investigation indicates that the Scorpio lost control before hitting the divider and entering the opposite carriageway.
DM Arvind Chauhan and SSP Abhinandan Singh visited the medical college and took details about the condition of the injured.
The bodies of Parminder Singh and Ravi Shankar have been sent for post-mortem examination. Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident.
The accident site is located around 25 kilometres from Saharanpur district headquarters.
