Hyderabad: The 2025 batch IPS trainee Uday Krishna Reddy, whose inspiring journey from a Marine Constable in the Andhra Pradesh Police to the Indian Police Service earned widespread attention after the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024, is now at the centre of a serious criminal investigation.

On Monday, he was admitted to a private hospital in Hyderabad after allegedly attempting suicide, a day after reports claimed that an internal inquiry at the National Police Academy (NPA) found merit in sexual harassment allegations made by a fellow trainee officer.

Mr Reddy, who is undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad, had already been booked by the Attapur Police based on a complaint filed by a woman IPS probationer. Police said the investigation is continuing, while the academy has reportedly placed him under suspension following the internal inquiry.

Alleged Suicide Attempt After Internal Inquiry

According to reports, Uday Krishna Reddy allegedly attempted suicide and was rushed to a private hospital in SR Nagar, Hyderabad. His condition is reported to be critical.

The incident occurred a day after reports emerged that the academy’s internal inquiry committee had examined CCTV footage and other evidence and reportedly found substance in the allegations made against him.

Following the inquiry, the academy reportedly suspended Reddy. The Attapur Police had also served notices to him as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.

Before the alleged suicide attempt, Reddy reportedly posted a WhatsApp status stating that he had “done nothing wrong.”

What Are the Allegations Against Him?

The criminal case stems from a complaint filed on July 18 by a 30-year-old married IPS probationer from Karnataka, identified as Suma HK, who is also undergoing training at SVPNPA.

According to her complaint, the alleged harassment began on June 23, when Reddy allegedly sent sexually explicit messages through WhatsApp and made derogatory remarks about her before fellow trainees.

She further alleged that the harassment escalated over the following weeks.

Among the allegations made in the complaint are:

  • Sending sexually abusive messages and making derogatory comments.
  • Wrongfully restraining and forcibly taking her into his room.
  • Pulling her hair and attempting to strangle her.
  • Holding a knife to her neck and preventing her from leaving.
  • Throwing packets of condoms at her to intimidate her.
  • Inappropriately touching and sexually assaulting her.
  • Secretly recording a private video without her consent.
  • Sending the video to her husband to allegedly blackmail her.
  • Spreading false and defamatory information to damage her reputation.

The complainant has sought strict legal action against the accused.

Police Register Case Under BNS and IT Act

Based on the complaint, the Attapur Police registered an FIR against Uday Krishna Reddy under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) relating to assault, stalking, criminal intimidation and offences against a woman’s dignity.

Police have also invoked Sections 66E and 67A of the Information Technology Act, which deal with violations of privacy and transmission of sexually explicit electronic material.

The investigation remains in progress.

Who Is Uday Krishna Reddy?

Before the present controversy, Mr Reddy had become widely known for his remarkable rise from a police constable to an IPS officer.

A 2024-batch IPS officer who secured All India Rank (AIR) 350 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, Reddy’s life story was often cited as an example of perseverance and determination.

Raised in Poverty

Mr Reddy hails from Ullapalem village in Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district.

His childhood was marked by personal tragedy. He lost his mother when he was just four-and-a-half years old and his father at the age of fifteen.

After becoming an orphan, he was raised by his maternal grandmother Ramanamma, who earned a livelihood by selling vegetables.

He completed his schooling in a Telugu-medium government school before pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature along with a paramedical course.

To support himself financially, he worked part-time as a laboratory technician at a private diabetic clinic while continuing his studies.

Journey from Marine Constable to IPS

In 2013, Reddy joined the Andhra Pradesh Police as a Marine Constable, serving at Gudluru and Ramayapatnam Marine Police Stations.

According to his earlier public accounts, a humiliating experience while serving under a senior officer became the turning point of his career.

He had stated that repeated public humiliation by a Circle Inspector inspired him to resign in 2018 and prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination with the goal of joining the IPS.

Five Attempts Before UPSC Success

After leaving his job, Reddy shifted to Hyderabad and began full-time UPSC preparation.

He had to transition from Telugu-medium education to studying in English and reportedly failed multiple attempts before finally succeeding.

On his fifth attempt, he secured AIR 350 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024, fulfilling his dream of becoming an IPS officer.

His story was widely shared as an example of determination overcoming poverty and adversity.

Career Now Overshadowed by Criminal Investigation

The allegations against Reddy have now placed his young IPS career under serious scrutiny.

With the National Police Academy reportedly suspending him and the Hyderabad Police investigating multiple criminal charges, the case has attracted nationwide attention.

Authorities have not announced any further administrative action beyond the reported suspension. The police investigation is continuing, and the allegations remain subject to due legal process.
