Chief Minister B Siddaramaiah led Karnataka’s newly appointed government has appointed B Dayananda as the new police commissioner of Bengaluru city. Mr Dayananda, a 1994 batch IPS officer, is currently serving as Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence).

A government press release said, “B Dayananda, ADGP, Intelligence has been transferred with immediate effect and posted until further orders as commissioner of police.”

Government transferred C H Pratap Reddy, a 1991 batch IPS officer and the current police commissioner of the city, to the internal security division as the Director General of Police (DGP).

Who is B Dayananda?

Mr Dayananda Dayananda, previously, headed the Intelligence department during the tenures of Siddaramaiah, HD Kumaraswamy and BS Yediyurappa.

He has served as the Mysuru city police commissioner in 2015, after which he was appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Intelligence, Bengaluru. He has also served as the joint commissioner of police for crime and traffic in Bengaluru.

His name had been on the list of candidates for the position of city police commissioner last year, but the then-BJP administration ultimately chose Reddy.

After completing the training of IPS, B Dayanand was posted as Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sub Divisional Police Officer) in Puttur subdivision in Dakshina Kannada district in 1998.

Thereafter, from 1999-2008, Dayanand served as Superintendent of Police in Vijayapura, Belagavi, Chitradurga, Dakshina Kannada and Kolar districts.

He was promoted as Deputy Inspector General of Police in 2008 and worked in Fire and Emergency Services and State Intelligence. Also he was posted as Joint Commissioner of Police Crime (East) in Bengaluru in 2011.

B Dayanand was appointed as Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) in the city in 2013. And in 2015, he was appointed as the Mysore Police Commissioner.

In 2016, he was posted as IGP State Intelligence. Dayanand also served as the IGP of the Central Range. From August 2020, he was working as Additional Director General of Police, State Intelligence.

Amid more shuffling of IPS officers in top posts, the government also promoted Dr M A Saleem, the special commissioner for traffic, as the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) DGP for Special Units and Economic offences, Bengaluru. Meanwhile, ADGP K V Sharath Chandra, who was the existing CID head, was transferred to the Intelligence department.

“K. V. Sharath Chandra, ADGP, CID, Bengaluru is transferred with immediate effect and posted until further orders as ADGP, Intelligence,” it added.
