Dehradun: In a significant step towards strengthening field-level preparedness, 86 IPS probationers of the 78th regular recruit batch visited the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) battalion at Jolly Grant in Dehradun for first-hand exposure to disaster response operations.
The trainee officers, currently undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad, were led by Deputy Director Chaitanya Siriprolu during the visit.
Focus on Coordination in Disaster Management
Commandant of SDRF Arpan Yaduvanshi briefed the probationers on the operational framework of the force, highlighting the importance of inter-agency coordination in disaster scenarios.
“In a disaster-prone state like Uttarakhand, seamless coordination between SDRF, State Emergency Operations Centre and central forces like NDRF is essential. Rapid information exchange and timely deployment of resources are key to life-saving operations,” he emphasized.
Insights into Major Rescue Operations
The probationers were given detailed briefings on several high-profile rescue missions carried out in the state, including the Silkyara tunnel operation, as well as operations in Dharali and Reni.
These case studies provided crucial insights into the challenges faced during disaster response in mountainous regions—ranging from unpredictable weather and difficult terrain to communication barriers and logistical constraints.
Hands-On Demonstration of Rescue Equipment
Officials also conducted live demonstrations of modern rescue equipment, offering the trainees practical exposure to tools and techniques used in emergency situations. The session was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical training and real-world application.
The interaction further underscored the humanitarian dimension of disaster response, stressing the need for quick decision-making, adaptability, and leadership under pressure.
Senior Officials Present
The session was attended by senior SDRF officials, including Deputy Commandant Shubhank Raturi and Assistant Commandant Sushil Rawat, who contributed to the training and shared their field experiences with the probationers.
Building Future-Ready Police Leadership
The visit forms part of the broader training curriculum aimed at equipping future IPS officers with the skills required to handle complex disaster situations effectively. With states like Uttarakhand frequently facing natural calamities, such exposure is considered vital in preparing officers for real-world challenges.
