Rajnath Singh Launches Strategic Jabalpur T-72 And T-90 Tank Overhaul Centre To Strengthen India’s Armoured Fleet

The new ₹472 crore Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility will overhaul 80 T-72 and T-90 tanks annually, boosting Indian Army combat readiness, maintenance capacity, and defence self-reliance.

Jabalpur: The Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility is set to become a major force multiplier for the Indian Army’s armoured fleet. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh recently laid the foundation stone for a new tank overhaul facility at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur (VFJ) in Madhya Pradesh. The project aims to improve maintenance, reduce downtime, and enhance the combat readiness of India’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks.

With the ability to overhaul 80 tanks annually, the facility will help bridge a critical maintenance gap and support the long-term operational effectiveness of India’s armoured forces.

Why The Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility Matters

India operates one of the world’s largest tank fleets, including thousands of T-72M1 ‘Ajeya’ and T-90 tanks that form the backbone of its armoured corps. Maintaining these platforms is essential for ensuring operational readiness across multiple fronts.

Until now, the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) Avadi in Tamil Nadu has been the primary centre for tank manufacturing and overhaul activities. However, its annual overhaul capacity has been insufficient to meet the Army’s growing maintenance requirements.

Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility Will Add Capacity For 80 Tanks Every Year

The new facility at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur is being developed at a cost of approximately ₹472 crore. Once operational, it will be capable of overhauling around 80 T-72 and T-90 tanks annually. This additional capacity will significantly contribute toward meeting the Army’s estimated requirement of roughly 230 tank overhauls every year.

Faster Repairs And Reduced Logistics Burden

One of the biggest advantages of the Jabalpur facility is its strategic location. Being closer to several Army field formations, the facility will reduce transportation time and logistical challenges involved in moving heavy armoured vehicles across the country for repairs and maintenance.

This will help tanks return to service faster and improve overall fleet availability during operational requirements.

Supporting India’s Large Legacy Tank Fleet

India currently maintains a substantial inventory of T-72M1 ‘Ajeya’ and T-90 tanks. These platforms continue to play a crucial role in conventional warfare and border defence despite the increasing use of drones, artificial intelligence, and advanced battlefield technologies.

During the inauguration, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that tanks remain an essential “iron wall” for national defence and continue to be critical components of modern military operations.

Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility: Modernisation Efforts Are Also Underway

The overhaul facility complements ongoing modernization programs for India’s armoured fleet. In recent years, the Army has approved extensive upgrade programs for T-72 tanks, including improved engines, fire-control systems, thermal imaging equipment, and other advanced technologies designed to extend operational life and battlefield effectiveness.

A contract has also been signed for the procurement and licensed production of advanced 1,000-horsepower engines for T-72 tanks.

What are the Benefits of Jabalpur Tank Overhaul Facility

The project is expected to generate significant economic activity in the region. Local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are likely to benefit through participation in the supply chain for hydraulic, electronic, and mechanical components required during overhaul operations. The facility will further strengthen Jabalpur’s long-standing position as one of India’s important defence manufacturing hubs.

Strengthening Aatmanirbhar Bharat In Defence

The Jabalpur overhaul facility aligns with India’s broader goal of defence self-reliance. By expanding domestic maintenance and overhaul capabilities, India can reduce dependence on external support, improve equipment availability, and maximize the service life of critical military assets.

Strategic Impact On Future Combat Readiness

The ability to quickly repair, overhaul, and upgrade armoured vehicles is increasingly important in modern warfare. The new facility will ensure that a larger number of tanks remain operational and mission-ready, giving the Indian Army greater flexibility and preparedness in future contingencies.
