Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on May 1, 2026, officially launched the self-enumeration phase of Census 2027 in the state by registering his own details on the online portal. He called upon residents to actively and enthusiastically participate in the nationwide exercise, emphasizing its importance for governance and development.
Self-Enumeration Drive to Continue Till May 15
According to officials, the self-enumeration campaign will run until May 15, 2026. This will be followed by the House-listing and Housing Census phase from May 16 to June 14, during which enumerators will conduct door-to-door data collection across the state.
Authorities have already begun administrative preparations in all districts to ensure the smooth execution of this large-scale exercise.
Census Key to Welfare Schemes and Policy Planning
Addressing the gathering, Hemant Soren highlighted that the Census is not just about collecting statistics but serves as a crucial foundation for policymaking and welfare schemes. He said accurate data would help the government deliver benefits more efficiently to eligible citizens.
He also instructed officials to include personnel proficient in regional languages to ensure better communication and inclusivity during the enumeration process.
Senior Officials Participate in the Initiative
The launch event was attended by key officials, including Prabhat Kumar, Director of the Directorate of Census Operations, and Manjunath Bhajantri, Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi. Ranchi Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sushant Gaurav and MLA Kalpana Soren were also present.
Meanwhile, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar also completed his self-enumeration at Lok Bhawan in Ranchi, underscoring the importance of citizen participation.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar emphasized that Census data plays a vital role in shaping development policies by providing insights into population, housing, and socio-economic conditions. He noted that such data is essential for designing effective and inclusive growth strategies.

Jharkhand BJP State President Aditya Sahu also participated in the self-enumeration process from his ancestral village in Ranchi district. He described the Census as the backbone of national development and urged citizens to cooperate fully by providing accurate information.
He stressed that the Census is not just a government responsibility but a collective national duty, crucial for ensuring that development benefits reach every section of society.
