Patna: Justice Sudhir Singh, acting chief Justice of Patna high court, has been appointed by the Central Government to perform the duties of the Acting Chief Justice of the Patna High Court. The appointment comes following the retirement of Chief Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai on July 11, 2026. The notification was issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice under Article 223 of the Constitution of India.
Justice Sudhir Singh Appointment: Centre Issues Official Notification
The Ministry of Law and Justice announced that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Sudhir Singh to discharge the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court.
The appointment has been made under Article 223 of the Constitution of India, which allows the President to appoint an Acting Chief Justice when the office of the Chief Justice becomes vacant or when the Chief Justice is unable to perform official duties.

Why Was the Appointment Made
Justice Meenakshi Madan Rai completed her tenure as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court and retired on July 11, 2026. To ensure the smooth functioning of the High Court until a new Chief Justice is appointed, Justice Sudhir Singh has been entrusted with the responsibilities of the Acting Chief Justice.
Who is Justice Sudhir Singh
Justice Sudhir Singh is a senior judge of the Patna High Court with more than a decade of judicial experience.
- He completed his schooling at Vikas Vidyalaya, Ranchi.
- He earned his graduation in Political Science from Patna College, Patna University.
- He obtained his LL.B. degree from Patna Law College.
- He enrolled as an advocate in 1991.
- During his legal career, he served as Central Government Counsel, Railway Advocate, Additional Standing Counsel for the Indian Audit and Accounts Department, and Assistant Solicitor General of India at the Patna High Court.
- He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Patna High Court on April 15, 2015.
- He became a Permanent Judge on April 20, 2016.
- Justice Sudhir Singh is also the son of Justice N.P. Singh, former Judge of the Supreme Court of India and former Chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
