New Delhi: Two of India’s well-known law universities, National Law School of India University (NLSIU) and Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), are still missing from the latest approved list issued by the Bar Council of India (BCI).

This comes even after the regulator extended the approval deadline multiple times. Meanwhile, Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) has successfully secured approval, bringing relief to its students and administration.

The development has attracted attention across the legal education sector because BCI approval is important for law colleges and universities offering legal education in India.

Details of NLSIU TNNLU BCI Approval

The Bar Council of India had originally fixed December 31, 2025, as the deadline for law institutions to complete approval-related requirements for the 2026-27 academic session. However, the deadline was extended five times.

The cut-off date was moved from January to March, then July, August, and finally September 15, 2026. Despite these extensions, NLSIU Bengaluru and TNNLU Tiruchirappalli were still not included in the approved list after the latest deadline expired. According to reports, GNLU was also pending earlier but has now received approval.

Why Does BCI Approval Matter

The Bar Council of India regulates legal education in the country. Its approval helps ensure that law programs meet required academic and professional standards.

Without approval, students often become concerned about regulatory compliance, admissions, and future enrollment-related processes. However, each case depends on the specific circumstances and directions issued by the BCI.

Important For Legal Education Standards

The approval process is designed to verify infrastructure, faculty strength, documentation, affiliations, and other academic requirements. The objective is to maintain consistent standards across law colleges and universities in India.

GNLU Receives Approval

One of the biggest updates is that Gujarat National Law University has now secured the required approval. GNLU was previously among institutions awaiting clearance, but reports indicate that it has successfully completed the process and obtained approval from the regulator.

Positive Development For Admissions

The approval provides certainty for prospective students who may be considering GNLU for legal studies. It also removes concerns surrounding the institution’s regulatory status for the upcoming academic session.

Why Do NLSIU TNNLU BCI Approval Hold

As of the latest update, NLSIU Bengaluru and TNNLU Tiruchirappalli have not appeared on the BCI’s approved list despite the expiry of the extended deadline.

Process May Still Continue

The absence from the latest approved list does not automatically explain the reasons behind the pending status. Universities may continue engaging with regulators and submitting required documents or compliance information. Any final decision will depend on the Bar Council of India’s official review process.

Impact On Students

Students and aspirants are closely monitoring the situation because regulatory approvals play an important role in legal education. Many students are expected to wait for further official clarification from the universities and the Bar Council of India regarding the next steps. At present, no major announcement regarding penalties or academic disruptions has been reported in connection with these institutions.

Bigger Picture For Legal Education

The latest development highlights how closely legal education institutions are monitored by regulatory authorities. Across India, law colleges and universities are required to regularly comply with approval and accreditation requirements. The process aims to maintain quality and accountability within legal education.
