The K9 Vajra-T Artillery Gun upgrade is set to significantly enhance India’s defence capabilities by integrating advanced anti-drone systems and real-time monitoring.

The K9 Vajra-T, already a powerful artillery platform, will now be equipped with automated remote weapons, jammers, and connected to the Akashteer drone defence system network. This move reflects the Indian Army’s growing focus on countering drone threats in modern warfare using indigenous technology and smart defense integration.

What is the K9 Vajra-T Artillery Gun Upgrade About?

The K9 Vajra-T is a 155mm self-propelled artillery gun developed in India by Larsen & Toubro in collaboration with South Korea’s Hanwha Defense.

Now, the platform is being upgraded to handle modern drone warfare threats. The new features include:

  • Automated Remote Weapon Systems (RWS)
  • Anti-drone jamming systems
  • Integration with real-time air defense network

These enhancements will allow the system to detect, track, and neutralize enemy drones quickly and efficiently.

Details of K9 Vajra-T Artillery Gun Integration with Akashteer

The integration of the Akashteer system is a key highlight of this upgrade.

Akashteer is an advanced command and control system designed to connect multiple air defense assets into one network. With this integration:

  • Real-time drone detection becomes possible
  • Faster decision-making and response improves
  • Coordination between defense units becomes seamless

This means the K9 Vajra-T will operate as part of a network-centric warfare system.

Why Anti-Drone Capability is Crucial

Drones are increasingly used in modern conflicts for:

  • Surveillance
  • Target acquisition
  • Precision attacks

Recent global conflicts have shown that even low-cost drones can cause serious damage.

By upgrading the K9 Vajra-T:

  • India strengthens its frontline defense
  • Reduces vulnerability to swarm drone attacks
  • Enhances survivability of artillery units

Importance of Automated Remote Weapon System (RWS)

The addition of an automated RWS allows:

  • Remote operation without exposing soldiers
  • Quick targeting of aerial threats
  • Improved accuracy with minimal human intervention

This system is especially useful in high-risk combat zones where reaction time is critical.

Role of Electronic Warfare: Jammers

Jammers will play a vital role in this upgrade.

They can:

  • Disrupt drone communication signals
  • Disable GPS navigation of enemy drones
  • Force drones to crash or return

This adds a non-kinetic defense layer, reducing the need for ammunition-based interception.

Boost to Indigenous Defense Capability

This project supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) initiative.

Key benefits include:

  • Increased use of locally developed technology
  • Reduced dependency on foreign defense systems
  • Strengthening of domestic defense manufacturing

The involvement of Indian companies ensures long-term scalability and upgrades.

Strategic Impact on Indian Defense

The upgraded K9 Vajra-T will:

  • Improve battlefield awareness
  • Enhance layered air defense
  • Provide mobility with protection

It is particularly useful in border areas and high-threat zones, where drone activity is rising.
