Kannauj: The Chyawan Rishi Ashram in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, associated with Maharshi Chyawan, regarded in traditional accounts as a pioneer of Ayurvedic knowledge and linked with the origin of Chyawanprash, is set to be developed as a major tourism destination. Under the Chief Minister Tourism Development Scheme, ₹81.35 lakh has been approved for the development of the ashram.

Of the sanctioned amount, ₹61 lakh has already been released as the first instalment. The Tourism Department will use the funds to develop essential facilities for devotees and tourists visiting the site.

Chyawan Rishi Ashram Gets Tourism Development Approval

The proposal for developing the ashram was sought by the state government and subsequently submitted by the Tourism Department. Following the proposal, the development plan received approval under the Chief Minister Tourism Development Scheme.

According to District Tourism Officer Dr. Maqbool Hasan, the bhoomi pujan for the proposed development work has already been conducted. Construction activities are expected to begin following the release of the sanctioned funds.

Located in the Chhibramau Assembly constituency, the ashram is considered an important part of the region’s spiritual and cultural heritage.

Multipurpose Hall, Solar Panels and Other Facilities Planned

The first instalment of ₹61 lakh will be used for several infrastructure and visitor-facility improvements at the ashram. The works will be undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC), with a focus on improving amenities for tourists and devotees.

The planned facilities include:

  • Construction of a multipurpose hall near the ashram.
  • Installation of solar panels to promote an environment-friendly setup.
  • Street lights for improved illumination at night.
  • RCC benches for visitors.
  • Signage to provide information and directions about pathways and facilities.

The Tourism Department is focusing on improving basic amenities and creating a more convenient environment for visitors.

Development to Strengthen Kannauj’s Cultural Heritage

The Chyawan Rishi Ashram is associated with India’s ancient rishi tradition, meditation and Ayurvedic knowledge. According to popular mythological beliefs, Maharshi Chyawan performed intense penance at this location.

The development of a site with such historical and spiritual significance is expected to give Kannauj’s cultural heritage greater recognition. It may also encourage more devotees and tourists to visit the area.

Kannauj’s Other Major Tourist Attractions

Kannauj, popularly known as the “Perfume City”, already has several attractions for visitors. These include:

  • Lakh Bahosi Bird Sanctuary – a destination for bird and nature enthusiasts.
  • Kannauj Archaeological Museum – showcasing the region’s history and cultural heritage.
  • Mata Annapurna Temple in Tirwa – an important religious site.
  • Mehndi Ghat – a scenic location along the Ganga.
  • Swayambhu Baba Gauri Shankar Temple – a prominent centre of religious faith.
  • 52-pillared Makhdoom Jahaniya – a site of historical significance.

With the development of Chyawan Rishi Ashram, the district’s religious and cultural tourism circuit is expected to become stronger, potentially encouraging visitors to explore multiple heritage and spiritual destinations across Kannauj.

Tourism Development Expected to Boost Kannauj’s Cultural Identity

The development of Chyavan Rishi Ashram is expected to add another important destination to Kannauj’s tourism map. Improved infrastructure and visitor amenities could encourage greater tourist and pilgrim footfall while providing better facilities at the heritage site.

The project is also aimed at highlighting Kannauj’s connection with India’s ancient spiritual and Ayurvedic traditions, potentially giving the district’s cultural tourism profile a further boost.
