The Kerala government is expected to appoint Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Gupta to lead the departmental inquiry against suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M R Ajith Kumar in connection with the Alappuzha ‘rescue operation’ case.
According to officials, the formal order assigning the inquiry is likely to be issued shortly.
Senior Officer Required Under Service Rules
The proposed appointment follows the provisions of the All India Services (Conduct) Rules, which require that disciplinary proceedings against an officer of ADGP rank be conducted by an officer holding a higher rank.
As Yogesh Gupta is a DGP-rank officer and currently serves as Kerala’s Road Safety Commissioner, he is being considered to head the inquiry.
Inquiry to Examine SIT Findings
Sources in the Home Department said the suspension of Ajith Kumar was based on the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT), whose report reportedly contains statements suggesting the possible commission of criminal offences.
Officials said these findings now require a detailed departmental inquiry, which must be conducted by an officer senior to the suspended ADGP. The government is expected to issue the necessary orders in the coming days.
Government Yet to Take Final Call
Despite reports indicating Yogesh Gupta’s likely appointment, the state government has not officially confirmed the decision.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala said that no final decision has been taken so far. He stated that, at present, the government has not initiated any such move, indicating that the appointment process is still under consideration.
