Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala High Court has questioned former Kerala Director General of Police (DGP) Tomin J Thachankary (IPS: 1987: KL) over his request to relax a bail condition to travel abroad while he is facing proceedings in a disproportionate assets case.
Thachankary, who is currently out on bail, has approached the High Court seeking permission to travel abroad. One of his bail conditions prohibits him from leaving the country without prior permission from the court.
During the hearing on Monday, the court questioned the circumstances surrounding his hospitalisation during detention, particularly in view of his present request to travel abroad for work.
High Court Questions Thachankary’s Hospitalisation During Detention
While considering the petition, the High Court noted that Thachankary had reportedly been admitted to a jail hospital for 28 days during his four-week detention.
The court questioned how an accused could fall ill after being sent to jail but recover following release, while examining the grounds cited for seeking permission to travel abroad.
Thachankary had earlier been sent to jail following his conviction and sentencing by the Vigilance Special Court in Kottayam in the disproportionate assets case.

Thachankary Says He Could Lose Job in Sharjah
Seeking relaxation of the bail condition, Thachankary submitted that he could lose his employment if he failed to return to work abroad.
He told the court that he was working as an operations manager with a jewellery group in Sharjah and was also a partner in a business concern.
His petition seeks permission to travel abroad despite the existing restriction imposed as part of his bail conditions.
Jail Superintendent Asked to Submit Hospitalisation Details
Justice A. Badharudeen has directed the concerned jail superintendent to submit a detailed report on Thachankary’s hospitalisation during his four-week detention.
The report has been sought to clarify the number of days he remained admitted to the jail hospital, the ailments for which he received treatment and the number of days he stayed outside the hospital during the detention period.
The court intends to examine these details while assessing the genuineness of his request for permission to travel abroad.
The matter has been adjourned to Friday for further hearing.
