Rajya Sabha Gets New Secretary: Who Is Dr K S Somashekhar?

New Delhi: In a significant administrative development, Dr K S Somashekhar has been appointed as Secretary in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, marking a major milestone in his distinguished parliamentary career spanning over three decades.

The appointment was made by the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C. P. Radhakrishnan, and comes into effect from April 18, 2026.

Over Three Decades of Parliamentary Experience

Dr Somashekhar, who joined the Rajya Sabha Secretariat in 1993, brings with him extensive experience in:

  • Parliamentary procedures
  • Legislative administration
  • Committee operations
  • Interpretation services

Before his elevation, he was serving as Additional Secretary in the Secretariat.

A native of Kolar, Karnataka, Dr Somashekhar began his career as a Parliamentary interpreter in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat.

  • Additional Secretary
  • Joint Secretary (including in the Interpretation Division)
  • Director and Joint Director
  • Worked with Parliamentary Standing Committees, including Science & Technology and Health-related panels

Dr Somashekhar has also represented India at multiple international parliamentary platforms. His global exposure includes:

  • Participation in Inter-Parliamentary Union meetings in Geneva
