New Delh: In a major boost to India’s mineral exploration efforts, Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to conduct advanced geophysical surveys in Odisha under the National Geophysical Mapping Programme (NGPM).
The initiative aims to strengthen mineral mapping and improve exploration outcomes using modern geophysical techniques.
Focus on Gravity and Magnetic Surveys in Odisha
As part of the agreement, MECL and GSI will carry out ground gravity and magnetic surveys across selected mineral-rich regions of Odisha.
These surveys are designed to generate high-resolution subsurface geophysical data, which will help identify geological structures and potential mineral-bearing zones. Odisha, known for its rich reserves of iron ore, bauxite, and other minerals, is a key focus area for exploration activities.

Strengthening India’s Geoscientific Collaboration
The MoA further strengthens the long-standing partnership between MECL and GSI, two key institutions involved in India’s mineral exploration ecosystem.
The collaboration is expected to:
- Improve geological understanding of mineral-rich regions
- Enhance accuracy in resource estimation
- Support systematic exploration planning
- Expand India’s geoscientific database
Officials said the data generated will play a crucial role in identifying new mineral prospects and improving exploration efficiency.
Agreement Signed by Senior Officials
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed in hybrid mode by senior representatives of both organisations:
From GSI:
- Dr. Pankaj Kumar, Deputy Director General & RMH-I
- Dr. K.N. Prasad, DDG (Geophysics)
- Dr. Anirudh Saha, Director (Geophysics)
From MECL:
- Mr. K.K.S.R.K.S. Sai, HoD (Geophysics)
- Mr. Pankaj Pandey, Director (Technical)
- Mr. Surendra Singh Kshatriya, Director (Finance)
- Mr. Karthik Ramachandran, HoD (Business Development & Commercial)
The signing ceremony was attended by senior technical and management officials from both organisations.
Boost to Critical Mineral Exploration and Aatmanirbhar Bharat
The collaboration aligns with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and enhanced critical mineral security.
Ground gravity and magnetic surveys are essential geophysical tools used to detect underground structures and mineral deposits. The programme is expected to:
- Accelerate mineral discovery
- Support future mining projects
- Strengthen resource security
- Enhance scientific exploration capabilities
With rising demand for strategic minerals, the NGPM initiative is expected to play a key role in boosting India’s long-term mineral development strategy.
