Mumbai: The Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) hosted an interactive session with Consul Generals, representatives of diplomatic missions, maritime stakeholders and senior officials at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal to explore opportunities for international collaboration across Mumbai’s emerging maritime economy.

The discussions focused on cruise tourism, marina development, shipbuilding, waterfront infrastructure, marine services and business tourism, as Mumbai Port seeks to expand its role beyond conventional cargo operations.

Mumbai Port Seeks Global Partnerships Beyond Cargo

Mumbai Port Authority Chairperson Dr M. Angamuthu, a 2002-batch IAS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, highlighted the changing role of modern ports and the opportunities emerging from Mumbai’s maritime infrastructure.

“Mumbai Port has connected India with more than 100 countries. We now aim to extend these relationships beyond cargo into cruise tourism, marina development, shipbuilding, convention infrastructure and the wider maritime economy.”

He said the port’s vision is aligned with Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, while inviting diplomatic missions, trade bodies and industry stakeholders to explore potential partnerships.

Four Major Maritime Opportunities Highlighted

The session presented four key areas where Mumbai and Maharashtra are seeking investment, collaboration and international participation:

  • Mumbai International Cruise Terminal: Positioned as a major cruise and passenger facility on India’s western coast, with potential to support cruise tourism and related maritime services.
  • Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina: The proposed marina will cover 14 hectares of water area and have a planned capacity of 424 yachts, creating opportunities in yachting, sailing, marine services, hospitality and yacht repair.
  • International Convention Centre: The proposed convention centre and commercial development along Mumbai’s eastern waterfront is aimed at creating opportunities in the convention, exhibition, hospitality and business-tourism sectors.
  • National Mega Shipbuilding Cluster: The proposed cluster in Maharashtra is being pursued with the state government to promote shipbuilding, ship repair and allied maritime industries along India’s western coast.

Diplomatic Missions Brought Into Mumbai’s Maritime Growth Plans

The interaction provided foreign missions and trade representatives with an overview of the maritime projects being developed around Mumbai Harbour and the wider opportunities in Maharashtra’s maritime sector.

The initiative comes as Mumbai Port seeks to build on its more than 150-year maritime legacy by combining cargo operations with cruise tourism, marine services, shipbuilding, waterfront development, convention infrastructure and international business partnerships.

Officials Present at the Session

The programme began with a welcome address by Capt. Pravin Kumar Singh, Deputy Conservator, Mumbai Port Authority.

Presentations on the port’s initiatives were delivered by:

  • Adesh Titarmare, a 2006-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, Deputy Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority
  • Pradeep P., a 2009-batch IAS officer of the Maharashtra cadre, Chief Executive Officer, Maharashtra Maritime Board
  • Vipin R. Menoth, Traffic Manager, Mumbai Port Authority

The session concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Traffic Manager Vipin R. Menoth.
