New Delhi: State-run power producer NTPC Limited recorded strong operational growth during the second quarter of FY 2026-27, with electricity generation increasing 12.93 per cent year-on-year to 117.9 billion units (BU) from 104.4 BU in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
The increase in power generation highlights continued growth in NTPC’s core electricity generation business. The company remains one of India’s largest integrated power utilities, with thermal power continuing to account for a significant share of its generation capacity.
NTPC Power Generation Rises 12.93% in Q2 FY27
NTPC generated 117.9 BU of electricity in Q2 FY27, compared with 104.4 BU in Q2 FY26.

Coal Dispatch Rises 28.45% Year-on-Year
NTPC also reported a sharp increase in coal dispatch during the quarter.
Coal dispatch rose 28.45 per cent year-on-year to 11.899 million metric tonnes (MMT) in Q2 FY27, compared with 9.260 MMT in the same quarter of the previous financial year.

- Year-on-year growth: 28.45%
Higher coal dispatch can support fuel availability for NTPC’s thermal power generation fleet, which continues to contribute significantly to the company’s overall electricity production.
NTPC Power Trading Volume Grows 22%
NTPC’s power trading business also recorded growth during the quarter.
The company’s power trading volume increased 22 per cent year-on-year to 15.06 BU, compared with 12.34 BU in Q2 FY26.

- Q2 FY26 trading volume: 12.34 BU
- Year-on-year growth: 22%
The increase in trading volumes adds to the growth recorded across NTPC’s key operational activities during the quarter.
NTPC Continues to Expand Generation Capacity
The operational performance comes as NTPC continues to expand its generation capacity while increasing its presence in renewable and emerging energy businesses.
The company’s current capacity and expansion plans include:
- Current installed capacity: More than 91 GW
- Capacity under construction: More than 35 GW
- Target installed capacity by 2032: 149 GW
- Renewable energy capacity target by 2032: 60 GW
The company aims to increase its overall generation capacity while gradually expanding the contribution of renewable energy to its portfolio.
NTPC Diversifies Into Renewable and New Energy Businesses
Along with conventional thermal and hydro power generation, NTPC has expanded its operations into several renewable and emerging energy segments.
These include:
- Solar energy
- Wind energy
- Battery energy storage
- E-mobility
- Waste-to-energy
- Nuclear power
- Green hydrogen
The diversification forms part of NTPC’s broader strategy to expand its presence across conventional as well as new and clean-energy businesses.
