Guardian Angels of Raghu And Ammu, Bomman & Bellie are now caring for another orphaned baby elephant from Dharampuri, in Mudumalai forest. IAS officer and Addl Chief Secretary Environment Climate Change & Forests, Govt of Tamil Nadu Ms. Supriya Sahu shared their video from her Twitter handle.
The story of baby elephants Raghu & Ammu being tended to by a mahout, Bomman, and a sweeper Bellie in the documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ has won the prestigious Oscar Award. The Documentary was shot around Theppakudu Elephant camp in Mudumalai Tiger reserve.
In a report published previously Indian Masterminds already reported that Bomman & Bellie have been taking care of many calves. It is part of their life. While Bomman is one of the most experienced caregiver, Bellie, his wife joined him recently.
In September last year, a two-week-old baby elephant got separated from his family in Mudumalai Tiger Reserve. He would have fallen prey to other animals had it not been for Bomman, who not only took care of the calf like his own for three days but also helped forest officials to reunite it with the family.
Field Director of Mudumalai Tiger Reserve Mr. K Venkatesh told Indian Masterminds that whenever an elephant calf is orphaned or left behind by the herd, usually Bomman is the main person to take care of it and reunite him with his mother – if she is alive. “He has been a caregiver to scores of elephants now”, says Mr. Venkatesh.
