Patna: Patna Women’s College and the Bihar State Biodiversity Board have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen biodiversity conservation, research and environmental awareness in Bihar. The agreement aims to create new opportunities for students and teachers through joint research, training, capacity-building activities and public awareness programmes.

The MoU was signed on Monday, October 12, at the Bihar State Biodiversity Board’s office in Patna. Through this partnership, the two institutions will collaborate on academic and research activities while encouraging greater public participation in biodiversity conservation.

MoU to Promote Research and Academic Collaboration

The agreement establishes a framework for cooperation between the college and the state biodiversity board. Both institutions will work together on academic projects, research activities, training programmes and development initiatives related to biodiversity and environmental protection.

The collaboration is expected to give students and teachers opportunities to explore environmental issues through research and practical learning. It will also help connect classroom knowledge with real-world conservation challenges.

For students, such exposure can support a better understanding of biodiversity, environmental management and the importance of protecting natural resources. Teachers may also benefit from opportunities to participate in collaborative research and capacity-building programmes.

Training and Capacity Building for Students and Teachers

A key objective of the partnership is to strengthen the skills and knowledge of students and faculty members in biodiversity-related fields.

The proposed training and development activities will encourage participants to engage more closely with environmental research and conservation practices. Such opportunities can help students understand the scientific and practical aspects of biodiversity protection beyond their regular academic coursework.

The agreement also aims to promote research-based education. By working with the biodiversity board, the college can create opportunities to connect academic learning with environmental issues affecting communities and ecosystems.

However, the announcement does not specify a schedule, funding allocation or a list of individual research projects. The scope and outcomes of future activities will depend on how the two institutions implement the agreement.

Joint Programmes to Raise Environmental Awareness

Alongside academic collaboration, the MoU places emphasis on public awareness and social responsibility.

The two institutions plan to organise joint activities to explain the importance of biodiversity conservation and encourage greater participation in environmental protection. Students and teachers are expected to play a role in these efforts through awareness programmes and related initiatives.

Public awareness is an important part of conservation because protecting biodiversity requires more than research and institutional action. Communities also need to understand the value of local ecosystems and the need to conserve plants, animals and other natural resources.

By involving students and educators in awareness activities, the partnership aims to strengthen the connection between higher education and environmental responsibility.

Officials Present at the Signing

The MoU was signed by Dr Sister Maria Tanisha, Principal of Patna Women’s College, and Amit Kumar, Secretary of the Bihar State Biodiversity Board.

Bharat Jyoti, Chairperson of the board, and Mihir Kumar Jha, Deputy Director, attended the event. The college was also represented by Alok John, Dean of National, International Collaborations and Consultancy Services (NICCS), and Dr Sumeet Ranjan, Head of the Department of Zoology.

The participation of representatives from both institutions reflects the academic and institutional nature of the partnership, which brings together higher education and the state’s biodiversity conservation framework.

Connecting Higher Education with Biodiversity Conservation

The partnership seeks to create a stronger link between academic institutions and environmental conservation efforts in Bihar. Through joint research, training and awareness programmes, it aims to help students and teachers engage with biodiversity-related challenges and explore possible solutions.

For students, the collaboration could provide opportunities to develop research skills and gain practical exposure to environmental issues. For the wider community, awareness initiatives may help promote a better understanding of biodiversity and the importance of protecting natural resources.

The MoU marks a step towards greater cooperation between education and conservation institutions. Its long-term impact will depend on the research projects, training programmes and public engagement activities that the two partners undertake under the agreement.
