Gurgaon: Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID), a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, Government of India, has acquired two Project Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) to execute inter-state transmission projects aimed at strengthening the country’s renewable energy evacuation infrastructure.

The two SPVs — Bhadla Ramgarh Power Transmission Limited and Krishnagiri REZ Transmission Limited — have been acquired under the Tariff-Based Competitive Bidding (TBCB) mechanism.

The projects will facilitate the integration and reliable evacuation of renewable power into the national grid, supporting India’s broader clean-energy expansion.

Two SPVs Acquired Under TBCB Mechanism

POWERGRID acquired Bhadla Ramgarh Power Transmission Limited on July 29, 2026, from the Bid Process Coordinator (BPC), REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited.

The second SPV, Krishnagiri REZ Transmission Limited, was acquired on August 3, 2026, from its BPC, PFC Consulting Limited.

Both SPVs will undertake dedicated inter-state transmission projects designed to strengthen connectivity between renewable energy generation zones and the national transmission network.

Bhadla-Ramgarh Project to Strengthen Rajasthan-UP Transmission Network

Bhadla Ramgarh Power Transmission Limited will implement the transmission system associated with the Inter-State Transmission Project Augmentation at Bhadla-III, Ramgarh PS and Kanpur (PG).

The project involves augmentation and bay extension works at existing substations located in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The major works will be undertaken at:

  • Bhadla-III substation, Rajasthan
  • Ramgarh substation, Rajasthan
  • Kanpur (PG) substation, Uttar Pradesh

The transmission system is scheduled for commissioning by January 20, 2029.

Once completed, the project will enable the integration and reliable evacuation of green power generated at the Bhadla-III and Ramgarh pooling stations.

Krishnagiri REZ Project to Evacuate 4.5 GW Renewable Energy

The second SPV, Krishnagiri REZ Transmission Limited, will implement the transmission system for Integration of Krishnagiri REZ Phase-I.

The project involves the establishment of two new substations in Andhra Pradesh, along with the construction of high-capacity transmission lines across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka.

The transmission network will include 765 kV and 400 kV transmission lines.

The system is scheduled to be commissioned within 36 months.

A major objective of the project is to facilitate the integration and evacuation of approximately 4.5 GW of renewable energy potential from the Kurnool area.

The project is expected to strengthen the transmission corridor required to move renewable electricity from high-potential generation zones to the wider grid.

Projects to Strengthen Green Energy Evacuation

POWERGRID is implementing several transmission projects through SPVs acquired under the tariff-based competitive bidding route.

These projects are being developed on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) basis.

The transmission systems are intended to strengthen India’s ability to evacuate electricity generated from renewable energy projects and deliver it reliably to the National Grid.

The expansion of renewable energy transmission infrastructure is increasingly important as India adds large-scale solar, wind and other renewable generation capacity.

By improving connectivity between renewable energy zones and demand centres, these transmission projects can help reduce grid constraints and support greater integration of green power.

Supporting India’s 500 GW Renewable Energy Goal

The two projects are aligned with the Government of India’s broader vision of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

POWERGRID said its transmission projects will contribute to strengthening the country’s green energy infrastructure and facilitate the evacuation of renewable power to the National Grid.

The expansion of transmission capacity is also expected to support India’s efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels by enabling greater integration of renewable electricity into the national power system.

POWERGRID’s Expansive Transmission Network

As of June 30, 2026, POWERGRID has commissioned and is operating 291 substations across its network.

The company has more than 1,86,595 circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines and 6,34,516 MVA of transformation capacity.

POWERGRID has also maintained an average transmission system availability of more than 99.80%.

According to the company, the use of advanced technological tools and techniques, along with greater adoption of automation and digital solutions, has helped it maintain high levels of transmission system availability.

Strengthening India’s Renewable Energy Infrastructure

The acquisition of the two SPVs expands POWERGRID’s role in developing transmission infrastructure specifically required for renewable energy integration.

The Bhadla-Ramgarh project will enhance transmission infrastructure connecting key renewable energy pooling stations in Rajasthan with the wider grid, while the Krishnagiri REZ Phase-I project will create new high-voltage transmission infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka to evacuate renewable energy from the Kurnool region.

Together, the projects represent another step towards building a stronger inter-state transmission network capable of supporting India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy capacity.
