NLC India Appoints Prasanna Kumar Acharya as CMD for Five-Year Tenure

Former Director (Finance) Prasanna Kumar Acharya takes charge for a five-year term, bringing nearly three decades of experience across power, mining and infrastructure sectors.

New Delhi: Prasanna Kumar Acharya has assumed charge as Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NLC India Limited on Thursday. Before taking over as CMD, Acharya was serving as Director (Finance) at NLC India.

He has been appointed as CMD for a period of five years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Acharya was earlier recommended for the top post by the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB). He was among seven candidates interviewed by the selection panel for the position.

Prasanna Kumar Acharya Takes Charge as NLC India CMD

With his appointment, Acharya will lead NLC India as the company works towards expanding its power generation, mining and renewable energy businesses.

Before becoming CMD, he served as Director (Finance) at NLC India and played a role in the company’s financial management, strategic initiatives and growth plans.

Dr. Acharya is a seasoned professional with nearly 30 years of experience across the power, mining and infrastructure sectors.

During his career, he has held key positions at several leading organisations, including:

  • NLC India Limited
  • GRIDCO
  • NTPC
  • Tata Power

His professional experience covers various areas of the energy and infrastructure ecosystem, including power generation, transmission, distribution, mining and metro rail infrastructure.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya has a strong academic and professional background.

His qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from Utkal University, Odisha
  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from M.S. Law College, Cuttack
  • Master of Commerce from Ravenshaw University, Odisha
  • Master of Business Administration (MBA)
  • Fellow Member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India
  • Associate Member of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India
  • Ph.D. from Utkal University, Odisha
  • Management Development Programme in Strategic Finance from IIM Lucknow

Experience Across Power, Mining and Infrastructure

Acharya’s professional journey spans multiple segments, including power generation, transmission and distribution, mining and infrastructure.

He also contributed to major infrastructure initiatives, including Phase-II of the Chennai Metro Rail project. The project had an estimated value of more than ₹63,000 crore.

His experience across different sectors has included financial management, project development, governance and strategic planning.

Acharya’s Contributions During Tenure at NLC India

During his tenure at NLC India, Acharya led several initiatives focused on digital transformation and governance reforms.

Key initiatives associated with his tenure include:

  • ERP modernisation
  • Centralisation of various finance functions
  • Adoption of AI-enabled systems
  • Introduction of a Vendor Invoice Management System
  • Support for critical government approvals
  • Initiatives related to acquisition of coal and critical mineral blocks
  • Advancement of renewable energy projects
  • Support for joint ventures with various state utilities

These initiatives were aimed at improving operational efficiency, financial processes and governance across the organisation.

NLC India’s Growth Roadmap Under Focus

As CMD, Acharya will be at the helm of NLC India’s ambitious growth roadmap across power generation, mining and renewable energy.

The company’s growth plans envisage achieving:

  • More than 20 GW of power generation capacity by 2030
  • More than 100 MTPA of mining capacity by 2030

Acharya has already been involved in supporting several initiatives linked to this growth roadmap during his tenure as Director (Finance).

The company’s focus also includes expanding its renewable energy portfolio and strengthening its presence in coal and critical mineral resources.
