Kanpur Nagar: Praveen Kumar, a distinguished mechanical engineer and seasoned professional, stands out as one of the youngest Chairman & Managing Directors (CMD) in India’s Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). Currently heading the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India Limited (ALIMCO) as its Chairman-cum-Managing Director, Kumar has been instrumental in driving the organization’s mission of manufacturing and providing state-of-the-art aids, assistive devices, and rehabilitation services for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens across India.

Early Life and Educational Background

Hailing from Kanpur Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, Praveen Kumar boasts a strong academic foundation. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Engineering) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious National Institute of Technology (NIT) Jamshedpur in 1994 with First Class Distinction. Further sharpening his managerial skills, Kumar earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) with a focus on Finance and Operations from the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon between 2011 and 2014.

Extensive Career Journey

With over three decades of experience in engineering and management roles, Kumar’s professional journey spans diverse industries and responsibilities.

Early Career (1994-2005): He began his career at Heavy Engineering Corporation Ltd., Ranchi, where he gained hands-on experience in various manufacturing domains including shop floor operations, industrial engineering, process planning, jig & tools design, and tooling. Kumar held the position of Section Head for Jig & Tools Design for nearly four years.

Global Steel and Engineering Leadership (2005-2014): Kumar then advanced to lead the planning department at Ajaokuta Steel Co Ltd, Nigeria, and Global Steel Holdings Limited, where he oversaw engineering shops catering to integrated steel plant requirements and external job orders. He also worked as a Project Manager at Punj Lloyd Limited in Gurgaon, managing complex engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects, including a significant 2×300 MW coal-based thermal power plant.

Leadership at ALIMCO (2016-Present): Praveen Kumar joined ALIMCO in July 2016 as General Manager for Projects and Commercial. In this role, he was responsible for managing project activities, systems, planning, material management, and procurement. His leadership skills and strategic vision led to his appointment as Chairman & Managing Director in February 2023.

Under Kumar’s leadership, ALIMCO continues to strengthen its presence in the rehabilitation industry by delivering quality assistive devices and aids. The corporation’s commitment to addressing the needs of PWDs and senior citizens nationwide has seen significant growth, supported by Kumar’s emphasis on innovation, quality assurance, and operational efficiency.

ALIMCO operates as a Government of India enterprise, contributing to social welfare through manufacturing and distribution of artificial limbs, assistive aids, and rehabilitation services. Kumar’s blend of technical expertise and managerial acumen plays a crucial role in navigating ALIMCO through a competitive market landscape.

Praveen Kumar combines traditional leadership values with modern hybrid working models, balancing office and remote operations to enhance productivity. Based in Kanpur Nagar, he leverages his deep industry knowledge and extensive project management experience to lead ALIMCO towards sustainable growth and greater social impact.

With nearly a decade at ALIMCO and an overall career spanning over 30 years, Praveen Kumar’s vision is poised to steer ALIMCO into new frontiers in assistive technology.
