President Droupadi Murmu Addresses 76th Batch of IRS (Customs & Indirect Taxes) Officer Trainees at Rashtrapati Bhavan

New Delhi: The Officer Trainees of the Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Indirect Taxes), 76th batch, called on President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The interaction provided an opportunity for the President to guide the young officers on their critical role in nation-building and economic governance.

Revenue Collection as a Pillar of Nation-Building

Addressing the officer trainees, President Murmu emphasized that revenue collection forms the backbone of the nation’s development, funding essential sectors such as infrastructure, education, health, and social welfare programs. She reminded the officers that through their work, they are active participants in India’s nation-building process, highlighting the broader social and economic significance of their responsibilities.

The President also stressed that tax collection should be smooth and efficient, ensuring minimum discomfort to the taxpayer, thereby fostering trust and cooperation between the government and citizens.

President Murmu outlined the multi-faceted responsibilities of IRS (Customs and Indirect Taxes) officers. She noted that officers serve as:

  • Administrators managing regulatory and policy frameworks
  • Investigators uncovering smuggling, financial fraud, and illicit trade
  • Facilitators of trade promoting legitimate commerce and international trade partnerships
  • Enforcers of law, safeguarding the economic frontiers of the country

She described the officers as sentinels of India’s economic security, tasked with balancing enforcement and facilitation, ensuring that trade and commerce thrive while the law is upheld.

Emphasis on Technology, Transparency, and Innovation

President Murmu urged the officer trainees to adopt technology-driven systems that ensure transparency, accountability, and efficiency in tax administration. She emphasized the need for integrity and fairness as the cornerstone of professional conduct.

Further, she encouraged the officers to be innovative, analytical, and technologically adept, adapting to the rapidly evolving landscape of global trade, digital transactions, and financial regulations.

A Call to Uphold Public Trust and Enable Economic Growth

Highlighting the importance of striking a balance between law enforcement and economic facilitation, President Murmu stressed that IRS officers should protect India from smuggling and financial crimes while simultaneously enabling legitimate trade and economic growth. She encouraged them to contribute positively to India’s economic development and international trade partnerships, reinforcing the importance of responsible governance and ethical conduct.

The President’s address serves as a guiding framework for the 76th batch of IRS officers as they embark on their careers in the Customs and Indirect Taxes service.
