Bharat Petroleum (BPCL) Showcases Zero-Emission Power Tech at Japan Energy Summit 2025 with Innovative ITE System

Rajeev Kumar presents Bharat Petroleum’s In-line Turboexpander (ITE) solution for sustainable energy recovery from natural gas pipelines
Indian Masterminds Stories

Tokyo: Rajeev Kumar, Chief General Manager (O&M and HSSE – Gas) at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), represented India at the prestigious Japan Energy Summit & Exhibition 2025 in Tokyo. He unveiled an innovative, clean energy solution — the In-line Turboexpander (ITE) — aimed at reducing carbon emissions and increasing energy efficiency in the natural gas sector.

Revolutionizing Pressure Recovery: From Waste to Clean Power

The ITE system is a cutting-edge, waste-to-clean energy technology that recovers energy lost during pressure let-down in gas pipelines. At sites where gas pressure is reduced from 35 kg/cm², this energy is traditionally wasted. The ITE captures it and converts it into carbon-free electricity.

Annual Output: Up to 2.6 GWh of green electricity

Impact: Powers approx. 700 homes

Carbon Offset: Prevents nearly 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions — equivalent to avoiding the use of 4,360 barrels of oil

This innovation aligns with BPCL’s broader sustainability strategy, which includes maximizing energy efficiency, advancing clean technologies, and supporting India’s transition to a Net Zero future.

India’s Energy Transition on the Global Stage

During his address, Rajeev Kumar highlighted BPCL’s clean energy journey, citing recent investments in renewables, energy storage, and hydrogen. He emphasized that innovations like the ITE demonstrate the company’s commitment to creating a sustainable, efficient, and low-carbon future.

The presentation resonated with global energy leaders at the summit, further establishing BPCL’s role in driving innovation within India’s public sector energy ecosystem.
