New Delhi: NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, has commenced the first-ever commercial sale of Manufactured Sand (M-Sand) produced from overburden soil generated at Neyveli Mines.

The commercial sale was formally flagged off on October 7, 2026, by Samir Swarup, Director (HR) and Director (Mines) – Additional Charge, NLCIL, at the M-Sand Plant area of Mine-I, Neyveli.

The initiative marks a first in the history of NLC India and is aimed at promoting resource utilisation, sustainable mining and circular economy practices.

NLCIL Converts Mine Overburden into Construction Material

The M-Sand is produced by processing overburden soil from Neyveli Mine-I, converting what would otherwise be a mining waste material into a value-added construction resource.

The initiative forms part of NLCIL’s efforts towards “Waste to Wealth”, with a focus on improving resource efficiency and promoting sustainable utilisation of materials generated during mining operations.

By converting overburden into M-Sand, NLCIL aims to support both resource conservation and value creation.

BIS-Certified M-Sand Approved for Construction Activities

The Manufactured Sand produced by NLCIL is BIS certified and has been approved by the Tamil Nadu Public Works Department (PWD) for construction activities.

The certification and approval ensure that the M-Sand meets the prescribed quality requirements for its intended applications.

The commercial availability of the product is expected to provide an additional source of construction material while supporting sustainable resource management.

Senior NLCIL Officials Attend M-Sand Sale Launch

The commercial sale was launched in the presence of senior NLCIL officials, including:

  • I. S. Jasper Rose, Executive Director (Mines)
  • N. Kumar, Unit Head, Mine-I
  • N. Arivazhagan, General Manager, Marketing & SDC
  • Senior officials of NLCIL

The launch at the M-Sand Plant marked an important step in taking the initiative from production to commercial utilisation.

M-Sand Initiative Supports Special Campaign 6.0

NLCIL’s M-Sand initiative is also part of the company’s observance of Special Campaign 6.0, the Government of India’s nationwide campaign focused on institutionalising Swachhata and promoting innovative practices in resource management and waste reduction.

The initiative demonstrates how mining overburden can be utilised productively instead of being treated only as waste.

NLCIL Strengthens Focus on Sustainable Mining

With the commencement of commercial M-Sand sales, NLCIL is strengthening its focus on sustainable mining, resource efficiency and environmental stewardship.

The initiative is expected to contribute to the company’s broader efforts towards responsible resource utilisation and value creation while supporting the vision of a greener and stronger India.
