Pune: The Chatushrungi Police Station in Pune has registered a case against an event manager from Ahilyanagar for allegedly cheating an IPS officer and his family of ₹10 lakh by failing to deliver promised decoration services for a wedding reception held earlier this year.
Complaint Filed by Officer’s Sister
The complaint was lodged on Monday by the IPS officer’s sister, a 38-year-old resident of Aundh. The officer, currently posted in Uttar Pradesh, had recently tied the knot in Pune and organized a reception on March 3.
Attempts to reach the complainant for further comments were unsuccessful, as her phone remained switched off, according to reports.
Advance Payment Made for ₹13 Lakh Contract
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the officer’s family had hired the event manager for decoration work at the Centre for Police Research (CPR) on Pashan Road, where several senior government officials, IPS officers, and other dignitaries were invited.
The total contract for the decoration was finalised at ₹13 lakh, out of which ₹10 lakh was paid in advance. The event manager had assured that the venue—including stage décor, flowers, lighting, and other arrangements—would be completed a day before the reception.
Decoration Work Incomplete Even During Event
However, the arrangements reportedly remained incomplete even as the event commenced. Senior Inspector Uttam Bhajnawale stated that the event manager failed to finish the decoration on time.
“He was supposed to arrange flowers, lights and other decorative items. He had assured timely completion, but even as guests arrived and the reception was underway, the work was still ongoing,” Bhajnawale said.
He further added that the decoration work continued even as guests began leaving the venue, leaving the IPS officer and his family dissatisfied.
Reception Cut Short Amid Discontent
Due to the incomplete arrangements, the IPS officer was compelled to conclude the reception ceremony hurriedly and leave the venue. The family subsequently felt cheated and decided to approach the police.
Police Initiate Action
The police have registered a case of cheating and issued a notice to the accused event manager. Further investigation is currently underway to ascertain the full details of the matter.
