Thiruvananthapuram: Quizzes provide students with significant opportunities to learn, explore new subjects and expand their understanding of the world, senior IAS officer Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy has said.
The 1991-batch Kerala-cadre IAS officer shared his views while performing the role of Grandmaster at a mega quiz competition organised by the Kerala Catholic Association Bahrain. Known for his outspoken views on integrity in public service and his anti-corruption initiatives, Dr. Swamy used the occasion to reflect on the importance of knowledge and the limits of human understanding.
The competition featured questions spanning a wide range of subjects, from agriculture and Indian law to sporting achievements and technological developments.
From Tulaipanji Rice to Cyber Terrorism: A Wide Range of Quiz Questions
The quiz covered diverse topics, encouraging participants to draw upon their knowledge of India’s culture, agriculture, legal framework, sports and technology.
Questions ranged from identifying the state in which Tulaipanji rice is grown to knowing the punishment prescribed under Indian law for cyber terrorism. India’s medal tally at the recently concluded Asian Games and the country’s first hydrogen-powered train also featured in the competition.
The variety of questions reflected the breadth of knowledge expected in a quiz, connecting subjects that students and participants may encounter in different areas of study and public life.
By bringing together topics from everyday knowledge, national developments and specialised fields, the competition offered participants an opportunity to test what they knew while learning about subjects beyond their immediate areas of interest.
Dr. Raju Narayana Swamy on the Vastness of Knowledge
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Swamy reminded the audience that knowledge is so vast that it cannot be completely conquered.
To explain the limitations of human understanding, he offered an analogy involving a potato bug inside a potato in a sack lying in the hold of a ship. The bug attempts to understand the vast universe by observing the movement of the ship, despite having access to only a tiny part of the larger reality.
Through this comparison, Dr. Swamy highlighted the difficulty of understanding the universe from a limited perspective. His remarks underscored the importance of intellectual humility and the need to continue learning rather than assume that knowledge can ever be fully mastered.
The message was particularly relevant in the context of a quiz competition, where participants are encouraged not only to demonstrate what they know but also to discover how much remains to be learned.
Dignitaries Highlight His Contributions to Technology in Governance
The dignitaries present at the event spoke about Dr. Swamy’s contributions to the use of technology in governance. Their remarks highlighted the role of technological innovation in improving public administration and the delivery of government services.
Quizmaster Arul Das, Kerala Catholic Association President James John and other dignitaries also addressed the gathering.
The event brought together participants and organisers around the shared objectives of learning, knowledge-sharing and intellectual engagement.
