Bihar: REC Limited, a Maharatna CPSE under the Ministry of Power, has inaugurated the Sankara Eye Hospital in Saharsa, marking a significant step toward improving healthcare accessibility in rural India.

The hospital has been developed with a ₹11.55 crore CSR grant under the initiative “Bringing Vision to Bihar,” aiming to provide advanced and affordable eye care services to underserved communities.

Inauguration by Senior Leaders

The facility was inaugurated by Union Minister Giriraj Singh in the presence of senior officials, including REC’s Director (Projects). The event highlighted the government’s focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure in underserved regions.

Vision for the Next Five Years

The hospital has laid out an ambitious roadmap to transform eye care services in Northern Bihar. Key targets include:

  • 1.5 lakh outpatient consultations for comprehensive eye screening and treatment
  • 40,000 cataract surgeries to reduce preventable blindness
  • Free and subsidized treatment for economically weaker sections

This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the burden of untreated eye conditions in rural areas.

Advanced Infrastructure and Technology

With REC’s CSR funding, the hospital is equipped with modern healthcare facilities, including:

  • State-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical ophthalmic equipment
  • Fully equipped operation theatres and patient wards
  • Mobile outreach units to conduct eye camps in remote villages

These facilities will help extend quality eye care beyond urban centers into rural communities.

Focus on Inclusive Healthcare

A key objective of the project is inclusivity. The hospital will prioritize access for underprivileged populations, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent patients from receiving essential eye treatment.

Strengthening Rural Healthcare Ecosystem

The initiative aligns with broader efforts to improve healthcare delivery in rural India. By combining advanced infrastructure with outreach programs, the project is expected to create a sustainable model for accessible eye care.
