New Delhi: Ramesh Chandra Mohapatra has assumed charge as Director (Technical) – Operations at South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) on Wednesday. He will also hold the additional charge of Director (Technical) – Project & Planning.
Following his assumption of charge, Mohapatra held a review meeting with Heads of Departments (HODs) and Area General Managers to take stock of key operational priorities and ongoing activities across the company. Officers and employees of SECL also congratulated him and extended their best wishes on taking over the new responsibilities.
Ramesh Chandra Mohapatra Brings Over Three Decades of Mining Experience
Mohapatra brings more than three decades of experience in the mining sector, with expertise in mine operations, project management and strategic leadership.
Prior to joining SECL as Director (Technical), he was serving as General Manager of Jhanjra Area at Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL).
During his career, he has held several key positions, including:
- Colliery Manager
- Project Officer
- Additional General Manager
- General Manager
He has also led several major underground and opencast mining operations under Coal India Limited.

Expertise in Mine Operations and Project Management
Mohapatra’s professional experience covers various aspects of mining operations and project execution. His areas of expertise include production enhancement, adoption of modern mining technologies and management of operational challenges.
His experience also includes:
- Enhancing coal production
- Adoption of modern mining technologies
- Mine and project management
- Resolution of land and rehabilitation issues
- Engagement with local communities
- Strategic leadership and operational planning
His extensive experience across different mining operations is expected to support SECL’s operational and project-related activities.
Educational Qualification of Mohapatra
Mohapatra is an alumnus of IIT-BHU and holds a degree in Mining Engineering, which he completed in 1990. He also holds an MBA in Human Resource Management.
In addition, he is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
Career Began at SECL’s Surakachhar Colliery
Mohapatra began his professional career at Surakachhar Colliery in SECL’s Korba Area. Over the years, he progressed through various positions and gained extensive experience across Coal India Limited’s mining operations.
His career has involved handling both underground and opencast mining operations, along with responsibilities related to production, project management, technology adoption, land and rehabilitation matters and community engagement.
International Exposure in Mining Sector
Mohapatra has also represented the Indian coal sector at international platforms during his career.
His international exposure includes participation in the African Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa. He has also been associated with industrial cooperation discussions in the Czech Republic.
These engagements have provided him with exposure to international developments and practices in the mining sector.
