SJVN Names Rajesh Kumar Chandel as Director (Projects), Strengthening Hydro Power Leadership 

Rajesh Kumar Chandel has assumed charge as Director (Projects) at SJVN Limited, bringing over 35 years of experience in hydroelectric projects across India, Nepal, and Bhutan, including major roles in Arun-3, Lower Arun, and Punatsangchhu projects.

New Delhi: Rajesh Kumar Chandel has officially assumed charge as Director (Projects) of SJVN Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

On his arrival at SJVN’s Liaison Office in New Delhi, he was welcomed by Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta, along with senior leadership including Director (Personnel) Ajay Kumar Sharma, Director (Finance) Parthajit De, Chief Vigilance Officer Pankaj Porwal, and other senior officials.

Over 35 Years of Experience in Hydroelectric Sector

Rajesh Kumar Chandel is a highly experienced power sector professional with more than 35 years of expertise in hydroelectric project planning, execution, monitoring, and international coordination.

His experience spans major hydro projects across India, Nepal, and Bhutan, making him one of the seasoned professionals in the hydroelectric infrastructure domain.

Leadership Role in Major Hydro Projects in Nepal

Before taking over as Director (Projects), Chandel served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the CMD of SJVN.

He also held key leadership positions in SJVN’s international subsidiaries:

  • Chief Executive Officer of SJVN Arun-3 Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SAPDC)
  • Chief Executive Officer of SJVN Lower Arun Power Development Company Pvt. Ltd. (SLPDC)

In these roles, he oversaw major hydroelectric developments in Nepal, including:

  • 900 MW Arun-3 Hydroelectric Project
  • 669 MW Lower Arun Hydroelectric Project

Key Contribution to Bhutan’s Punatsangchhu Project

Chandel also served as Managing Director and Member Secretary of Punatsangchhu Hydro Electric Power Authority (PHPA-II) in Bhutan.

He played a significant role in the commissioning of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project, one of Bhutan’s major power infrastructure achievements.

Experience in India’s Major Hydropower Projects

In India, he has contributed to several landmark projects, including:

  • Head Race Tunnel construction work of the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station in Himachal Pradesh (nearly 8 years of involvement)
  • Headed the 66 MW Dhaulasidh Hydro Electric Project in 2020

His long-standing contribution has been instrumental in strengthening India’s hydroelectric capacity.

Educational Background and Professional Credentials

Born on September 14, 1971, in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, Rajesh Kumar Chandel holds:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering
  • MBA qualification

He is also a Fellow of The Institution of Engineers (India) and a certified Chartered Engineer.

Chandel joined SJVN Limited on May 5, 1994, after beginning his career with HIMUDA in 1990.
