Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh has emerged as one of India’s leading states in agriculture and horticulture, strengthening its identity through consistent growth in farm productivity and diversification. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, the year 2026 is being observed as “Kisan Kalyan Year”, aimed at increasing farmers’ income, promoting agricultural diversification, and making farming more profitable.

The government is focusing on moving beyond traditional crops and encouraging allied sectors such as horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing to enhance rural incomes.

Strong Growth in Vegetable Production Over the Past Four Years

The horticulture sector in the state has recorded a significant rise in vegetable production. Over the last four years, Madhya Pradesh has witnessed an increase of approximately 21.58 lakh metric tonnes in vegetable output.

Currently, the state ranks third in India in vegetable production, reflecting its growing contribution to national food security and nutrition supply.

According to official data:

  • Vegetable production in 2022–23: 236.41 lakh metric tonnes
  • Vegetable production in 2024–25: 257.99 lakh metric tonnes

This steady growth highlights the strong performance of the agriculture and horticulture sector in the state.

“Samriddh Kisan–Samriddh Madhya Pradesh” Vision for Expansion

The Department of Horticulture and Food Processing has prepared a comprehensive roadmap under the theme “Samriddh Kisan–Samriddh Madhya Pradesh”, focusing on expanding vegetable cultivation across the state.

Favorable climate conditions, fertile soil, expanded irrigation facilities, and adoption of modern farming techniques have contributed to continuous growth in production.

At the national level:

  • India’s total vegetable production: ~2177 lakh metric tonnes
  • Madhya Pradesh contribution: ~259 lakh metric tonnes

This demonstrates the state’s important role in strengthening India’s food and nutrition security.

Wide Variety of Vegetable Crops Grown in the State

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh cultivate a diverse range of vegetables including:
Onion, potato, tomato, brinjal, cauliflower, cabbage, green peas, okra, spinach, bottle gourd, taro, bitter gourd, cucumber, radish, ridge gourd, carrot, sweet potato, capsicum, and parwal.

Among these, onion holds special importance due to its large cultivation area and market demand.

Onion Cultivation Expands Due to Rising Demand

Onion remains one of the most widely cultivated vegetables in the state. The cultivated area has increased steadily:

  • 2022–23: 2.17 lakh hectares
  • 2024–25: approximately 2.30 lakh hectares

This growth reflects both rising market demand and increasing farmer confidence in vegetable farming as a profitable option.

Focus on Small Farmers and Income Generation

The state government is promoting vegetable farming among small and marginal farmers, as it offers higher income potential even on limited land.

Vegetable cultivation is being prioritized during the “Kisan Kalyan Year” as it provides:

  • Regular income throughout the year
  • Better land utilization
  • Higher returns compared to traditional crops

This approach is aimed at improving rural livelihoods and ensuring economic stability for farmers.

Expansion Plan for 54,000 Hectares Under Horticulture Mission

The Horticulture and Food Processing Department has set a target to expand vegetable cultivation across 54,000 hectares in the state.

Planned distribution includes:

  • Potato: 13,300 hectares
  • Tomato: 9,800 hectares
  • Onion: 16,500 hectares
  • Peas: 3,500 hectares
  • Cauliflower & cabbage: 3,500 hectares
  • High-value vegetables: 1,200 hectares
  • Cucurbit vegetables: 6,200 hectares

Farmers will receive support in the form of:

  • Technical guidance
  • Quality planting material
  • Modern farming techniques
  • Market linkage support

Employment Generation and Rural Development Boost

The expansion of vegetable farming is also expected to generate significant rural employment. Activities related to production, transportation, storage, and marketing are creating new job opportunities in rural areas.

The sector is becoming a major driver of rural economic development while strengthening the supply chain of fresh vegetables across markets.

Government Push for Modern and Profitable Farming

Under the leadership of Narayan Singh Kushwaha, the state’s Horticulture and Food Processing Department is actively encouraging farmers to adopt modern farming practices.

Key focus areas include:

  • Protected cultivation
  • Micro-irrigation systems
  • High-quality seeds
  • High-value vegetable production

These initiatives aim to increase productivity and profitability for farmers across the state.

Toward a Stronger and Self-Reliant Agricultural Economy

The ongoing transformation in Madhya Pradesh’s agriculture and horticulture sector reflects the impact of farmer-centric policies and long-term planning. With strong growth in vegetable production and targeted expansion programs, the state is moving closer to its vision of becoming a leading horticulture hub in India.

The “Kisan Kalyan Year 2026” initiative is expected to further strengthen farmer income, enhance food security, and accelerate rural development, contributing to the broader goal of a prosperous and self-reliant Madhya Pradesh.
