New Delhi: Senior diplomat Sudhakar Dalela, a 1993-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer and Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to Nepal. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly. Dalela will succeed Naveen Srivastava, who recently completed his tenure as India’s envoy in Kathmandu.

The appointment brings an experienced South Asia specialist to a strategically important diplomatic posting. Dalela has previously served as India’s Ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025 and held key positions in the MEA’s Northern Division, where he oversaw India’s relations with Nepal and Bhutan. His experience also spans economic diplomacy, international trade negotiations, multilateral cooperation and India’s engagement with major global and regional groupings.

Who Is Sudhakar Dalela?

Sudhakar Dalela is a senior Indian diplomat who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1993. Over more than three decades, he has served in diplomatic missions across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, North America and South America, alongside important assignments in the Indian government.

Before his appointment as India’s next Ambassador to Nepal, Dalela served as Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA, a position he assumed on September 1, 2025. In this capacity, he handled India’s economic diplomacy, development partnerships with countries of the Global South, engagement with Africa, multilateral economic relations, and new and emerging strategic technologies.

He also served as India’s Sherpa for BRICS, IBSA and I2U2, representing India in important multilateral engagements. His background in neighbourhood affairs and economic diplomacy is expected to be relevant to his new assignment in Kathmandu.

Educational Qualification: Electronics Engineering

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Dalela earned a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering.

His technical education preceded a diplomatic career that developed across bilateral relations, international trade policy, multilateral negotiations and strategic partnerships. Over the years, he has worked on both India’s immediate neighbourhood and its wider international economic engagement.

Sudhakar Dalela’s Diplomatic Career and Key Postings

Dalela’s career has included ambassadorial assignments, senior responsibilities at the MEA headquarters, postings in the United States and work on international trade and economic policy. His experience with India’s neighbouring countries is particularly relevant to his appointment as ambassador to Nepal.

Ambassador of India to Bhutan (2022–2025)

Dalela served as India’s Ambassador to Bhutan from 2022 to 2025. During this assignment, he represented India in its relations with the Himalayan kingdom, an important partner in India’s neighbourhood and regional engagement.

India and Bhutan maintain close cooperation across development assistance, infrastructure, connectivity, hydropower and people-to-people relations. His experience in Thimphu gave him direct exposure to the diplomatic and developmental priorities of a neighbouring country with deep strategic significance for India.

His Bhutan assignment also followed earlier responsibilities in the MEA’s Northern Division, where he had handled India’s relations with both Bhutan and Nepal. This combination of headquarters experience and ambassadorial service in Bhutan forms an important part of his diplomatic background.

Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs (2025–2026)

Dalela assumed charge as Secretary (Economic Relations) in the MEA on September 1, 2025.

The position placed him at the centre of India’s international economic engagement. His responsibilities included economic diplomacy, development partnerships with countries of the Global South, cooperation with Africa, multilateral economic relations, and new and emerging strategic technologies.

In this role, he also served as India’s Sherpa for BRICS, IBSA and I2U2. These assignments required engagement with partner countries on shared economic interests, strategic cooperation and multilateral initiatives.

His tenure in the Economic Relations division brought together his earlier experience in international trade policy and diplomatic negotiations, giving him a broad understanding of India’s economic priorities and its engagement with global partners.

India’s Sherpa for BRICS, IBSA and I2U2

As India’s Sherpa for BRICS, IBSA and I2U2, Dalela played an important role in preparing and coordinating India’s engagement with these groupings.

BRICS brings together countries for cooperation on global economic and political issues. IBSA is a trilateral forum comprising India, Brazil and South Africa, while I2U2 brings India together with Israel, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.

Dalela’s work in these forums involved India’s broader economic and strategic engagement with partner countries. His BRICS responsibilities also included work associated with the preparations for the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi in 2026.

His experience in multilateral diplomacy adds another dimension to his profile as he moves towards a bilateral ambassadorial assignment focused on India’s relationship with Nepal.

Deputy Chief of Mission, Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. (2020–2022)

Before returning to New Delhi for his later assignments, Dalela served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C., from 2020 to 2022.

The Deputy Chief of Mission is the second-ranking official at an embassy and assists the Ambassador in overseeing the mission’s work. The role involves coordinating diplomatic engagement, managing mission operations and supporting bilateral relations.

Dalela had previously served in Washington as Minister for Political Affairs from 2011 to 2014. His two assignments in the United States provided him with experience in political diplomacy and the management of bilateral relations with one of India’s key strategic partners.

He also served as India’s Consul General in Chicago, giving him experience in consular work and engagement with Indian communities and other stakeholders in the United States.

Deputy Permanent Representative of India to the WTO (2014–2016)

Dalela has substantial experience in international trade policy. He served as India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva from 2014 to 2016.

The WTO is a central multilateral institution governing international trade rules and providing a forum for negotiations among member countries. India’s participation in the organisation involves advancing its trade interests and engaging with other members on international economic issues.

Dalela’s work at India’s Permanent Mission to the WTO exposed him to multilateral trade negotiations and the policy considerations involved in shaping international trade arrangements.

He also served in the Department of Commerce in New Delhi as Director (Trade Policy). The combination of these assignments gave him experience in both the formulation of domestic trade policy and its representation in international negotiations.

Joint Secretary (North), Ministry of External Affairs (2016–2019)

One of Dalela’s most relevant assignments for his new role was his tenure as Joint Secretary (North) in the MEA from 2016 to 2019.

The Northern Division handles India’s relations with neighbouring countries, including Nepal and Bhutan. As Joint Secretary (North), Dalela oversaw important bilateral matters involving these countries.

He had earlier served as Director (North) from 2006 to 2007. These assignments gave him familiarity with India’s neighbourhood policy and the diplomatic considerations involved in managing relations with neighbouring governments.

His return to a bilateral posting in the region, after serving as Ambassador to Bhutan and Secretary (Economic Relations), brings together experience acquired at the MEA headquarters and in an ambassadorial role.

Director in the Prime Minister’s Office (2009–2011)

Dalela served as a Director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) from 2009 to 2011.

His responsibilities included India’s engagement with South Asian neighbours, East Asia and countries across the Indo-Pacific, the Gulf, the Middle East and Africa.

The assignment gave him exposure to India’s foreign policy priorities at the highest level of government and to the coordination required across different geographical regions and strategic relationships.

This experience complements his later work in the MEA, where he handled regional relations, economic diplomacy and multilateral engagement.

Other International Diplomatic Postings

Dalela began his diplomatic career in Tel Aviv, Israel. He subsequently served at Indian missions in several countries, including Brazil, Bangladesh, Switzerland, Bhutan and the United States.

His international postings include:

  • Tel Aviv, Israel: His first diplomatic assignment after joining the IFS.

  • Brasília, Brazil: Service at India’s mission in South America.

  • Dhaka, Bangladesh: Experience in India’s engagement with a key South Asian neighbour.

  • Geneva, Switzerland: Work at India’s mission in a major centre of multilateral diplomacy, including trade negotiations.

  • Chicago, United States: Service as India’s Consul General.

  • Washington, D.C., United States: Service as Minister for Political Affairs and later Deputy Chief of Mission.

  • Thimphu, Bhutan: Service as India’s Ambassador from 2022 to 2025.

These postings reflect a career spanning bilateral diplomacy, consular engagement, international economic relations and regional affairs.

Why Is Sudhakar Dalela’s Appointment to Nepal Important?

Dalela’s appointment comes at a significant time in India-Nepal relations, which encompass trade, transit, infrastructure, cross-border connectivity, energy cooperation, regional security and extensive people-to-people ties.

India and Nepal share an open border and longstanding cultural, social and economic connections. Their relationship also involves complex political and territorial issues that require sustained diplomatic engagement.

Dalela’s familiarity with Nepal from his earlier assignments as Director (North) and Joint Secretary (North), together with his experience as Ambassador to Bhutan, gives him substantial background in the region.

His appointment also comes as India and Nepal prepare for further high-level engagement, including a proposed visit to India by Nepal’s Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, in November 2026. Infrastructure, connectivity, trade and bilateral concerns are among the issues that could shape the diplomatic agenda.

Succeeding Naveen Srivastava

Dalela will succeed Naveen Srivastava as India’s Ambassador to Nepal. Srivastava took charge in Kathmandu in June 2022 and served during a period of engagement between the two countries on energy cooperation, infrastructure connectivity and economic partnership.

Dalela’s appointment brings a diplomat with previous experience in both Nepal-related policy at the MEA headquarters and ambassadorial service in a neighbouring country to the position.

He is expected to assume his new responsibilities shortly, following the formal diplomatic procedures associated with the appointment.

Sudhakar Dalela’s Personal Life

Sudhakar Dalela is married to Namrata Dalela, who is a professional textile conservator. The couple has two children: a daughter, Aditi, and a son, Anant.

Dalela’s professional career has taken him across several countries and international institutions, with responsibilities spanning India’s neighbourhood relations, trade policy, economic diplomacy and multilateral cooperation.

A Career Spanning Neighbourhood Diplomacy and Global Engagement

From his early posting in Tel Aviv to senior positions at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of External Affairs, Dalela has built a career across multiple dimensions of India’s foreign policy.

His experience as Ambassador to Bhutan, his work overseeing Nepal and Bhutan affairs at the MEA, and his responsibilities in international trade and economic diplomacy provide a broad foundation for his new assignment.

As India’s next Ambassador to Nepal, he will represent New Delhi in a relationship that combines close economic and social ties with important strategic and diplomatic considerations. His appointment places a senior diplomat with extensive regional experience at the centre of India’s engagement with one of its closest neighbours.
