MUMBAI: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Sudhakar Malli as Executive Director with effect from October 1, 2026.
Prior to his elevation, Malli was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge in the RBI’s Department of Supervision. In his new role as Executive Director, he will oversee the Department of Supervision (Supervisory Assessment).
His appointment comes with nearly three decades of experience at the central bank, including more than 25 years in the supervision of banks, non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) and co-operative banks.
Over 25 Years in Banking Supervision
Malli has built much of his career in the RBI’s supervisory functions, with extensive experience in overseeing regulated financial entities.
His professional experience spans supervision of commercial banks, NBFCs and co-operative banks, giving him a broad understanding of the regulatory and supervisory framework governing India’s financial sector.
In addition to his domestic supervisory responsibilities, Malli has around five years of supervisory experience in overseas jurisdictions.
He has also worked in the area of currency management during his career at the RBI.

Educational Background
Malli holds a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB), a professional qualification in banking.
His combination of technical education and extensive regulatory experience has formed the foundation of his long career at the RBI.
New Role at RBI
As Executive Director, Malli will oversee the Department of Supervision (Supervisory Assessment), a key function within the RBI’s regulatory architecture.
The supervisory assessment function involves evaluating the financial and operational health of regulated entities and their compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
Malli’s elevation brings his extensive experience in banking supervision to the RBI’s senior executive leadership.
With nearly 30 years of experience at the central bank and more than 25 years specifically in supervisory roles, his new assignment places him at the helm of an important component of India’s financial-sector supervisory framework.
