Patna: Indian hockey has achieved a historic milestone at the Asian Games 2026, with both the men’s and women’s teams winning gold medals in the same edition of the continental tournament. Bihar Rural Development and Information & Public Relations Minister and Bihar Hockey Association president Shravan Kumar congratulated both teams, describing the achievement as a proud moment and a strong foundation for the continued growth of Indian hockey.

Kumar said the simultaneous gold-medal victories by the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams mark a historic achievement for the country. He attributed the success to the players’ hard work, discipline and team spirit.

Women End 44-Year Asian Games Gold Wait

The Indian women’s hockey team defeated China 1–0 in the final to win the Asian Games gold medal after a gap of 44 years. The victory also secured India a direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

India produced a disciplined defensive performance against the defending champions. Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal, while goalkeeper Savita played an important role in keeping China from finding an equaliser.

The result brought the women’s team back to the top of the Asian Games podium after four decades and added another major achievement to India’s recent progress in international hockey.

Men’s Team Retains Asian Games Hockey Gold

The Indian men’s hockey team completed the double on Saturday by defeating Malaysia 5–1 in the final. The victory helped India retain its Asian Games hockey title and also secured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened India’s scoring through a penalty corner. The Indian side then maintained an attacking and controlled approach throughout the match to secure a convincing victory.

The win also marked India’s second consecutive Asian Games men’s hockey gold and its fifth overall gold medal in the men’s competition. India had earlier defeated Pakistan 4–3 in the semi-final.

A Historic Double for Indian Hockey

The two victories together created a significant moment for Indian hockey. For the first time, the Indian men’s and women’s teams won Asian Games hockey gold medals in the same edition.

The achievement demonstrates the strength of Indian hockey across both categories and provides both teams with direct qualification for the next Olympic Games.

For the players, coaches and support staff, the Asian Games campaign therefore represents more than two gold medals. It also gives Indian hockey a strong platform as preparations continue for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Shravan Kumar Congratulates Teams

Congratulating the Indian teams, Shravan Kumar said Indian hockey had demonstrated its strength on the Asian stage. He extended his greetings to the players, coaches, support staff and Hockey India for their contribution to the historic achievement.

He said the two gold medals are a matter of pride for the entire country and described the success as a new golden chapter for Indian hockey.

Kumar also expressed hope that India’s next major target would be Olympic gold. His comments came as both teams secured their places at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics through their Asian Games victories.

Success That Can Inspire Young Players

The minister also highlighted the wider impact of the achievement on young athletes. According to him, the success of the Indian teams can inspire millions of young players who are choosing hockey as their sporting dream and working hard on the field.

The victories provide a strong example of how discipline, teamwork and sustained effort can translate into success at the international level.

With both teams now qualified for the 2028 Olympics, the Asian Games gold medals also give Indian hockey an opportunity to build on its current momentum and prepare for the next major international challenge.

Indian Hockey Looks Towards the Olympics

The Asian Games 2026 campaign has given Indian hockey success in both the men’s and women’s competitions while also delivering Olympic qualification.

For the women, the gold ended a 44-year wait. For the men, the 5–1 victory over Malaysia confirmed their second consecutive Asian Games title. Together, the results have created a historic double for Indian hockey and placed the sport firmly in focus ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
