New Delhi: The Supreme Court Collegium, in a major decision taken on August 18, has approved the appointment and elevation of several judges across different High Courts in the country.
The Collegium has cleared names for the Orissa, Gauhati and Chhattisgarh High Courts, besides approving the confirmation of additional judges as permanent judges in the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Calcutta High Court.
The Collegium has also extended the tenure of six additional judges of the Calcutta High Court by another six months.
Four Judges Approved for Orissa High Court
The Collegium has approved the appointment of four judges to the Orissa High Court. They are:
- Sasmita Tripathy
- Aditya Narayan Das
- Rajjeet Roy
- Gautam Misra
Two Names Cleared for Gauhati High Court
For the Gauhati High Court, the Collegium has approved the appointment of:
- Nchumbemo Mozhui
- Helen Dawngliani
The appointments will add to the judicial strength of the High Court and are part of the Collegium’s latest round of recommendations for various High Courts.

Three Judges Approved for Chhattisgarh High Court
The Collegium has also cleared three names for the Chhattisgarh High Court:
- Santosh Sharma
- Sushma Sawant
- Sudhir Kumar
Additional Judges Made Permanent
Besides fresh appointments, the Collegium has also approved the confirmation of additional judges as permanent judges in two High Courts.
In the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Rohit Kapoor, presently serving as an additional judge, has been approved for appointment as a permanent judge.
Similarly, Justice Biswaroop Chowdhury, an additional judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been approved for appointment as a permanent judge.
Six Calcutta HC Judges Get Six-Month Extension
The Collegium has also approved a six-month extension for six additional judges of the Calcutta High Court.
The judges whose tenure has been extended are:
- Justice Prasenjit Biswas
- Justice Uday Kumar
- Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta
- Justice Supratim Bhattacharya
- Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee
- Justice Md. Shabbar Rashidi
The extensions will allow the judges to continue serving as additional judges beyond their existing tenure.

The latest decisions cover multiple aspects of High Court appointments, including fresh appointments, confirmation of additional judges as permanent judges and extension of the tenure of existing additional judges.
The recommendations of the Supreme Court Collegium are part of the ongoing process of strengthening judicial capacity across the High Courts.
