Hyderabad: Telangana Director General of Police C.V. Anand, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Telangana cadre, has directed police officers to adopt a data-led and unit-specific approach to policing amid a rise in registered cases across the state.

Anand issued the directions while chairing a half-yearly crime review meeting with senior police officers at the DGP’s office on Friday. The review examined crime trends and the performance of different police units.

Crime Cases Rise Over Three Years

Telangana recorded 2,84,363 registered cases in 2025-26, compared with 2,65,377 cases in 2023-24, representing a 7.15 per cent increase over the three-year period.

The review also showed differences across crime categories, with narcotics and organised crime recording significant increases, while cybercrime and economic offences declined.

Key figures highlighted during the review included:

  • Narcotics cases: Rose 46.10 per cent, from 2,026 to 2,960.
  • Organised crime: Increased from 25 cases to 451.
  • Cybercrime: Declined by 13.29 per cent.
  • Economic offences: Declined by 13.28 per cent.
  • Grave crimes: Fell 10.33 per cent year-on-year, from 7,019 to 6,294.

DGP Seeks Unit-Specific Action

Anand asked officers to move beyond simply reviewing crime statistics and instead examine the causes of crime, offender modus operandi, investigation quality and case disposal.

He directed zonal Deputy Inspectors General and multi-zone Inspectors General to examine inspection notes and ensure immediate action on issues identified during district tours and police station inspections.

Officers were also asked to identify emerging crime trends at an early stage and prepare specific action plans wherever necessary.

Focus on Data and Digital Policing

The meeting also reviewed the use of technology and digital policing systems.

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS) data-update rate has risen to around 96 per cent, compared with the earlier 70–80 per cent range.

Presentations during the review covered technology-based policing tools, including CCTNS, TG-COP, Hawkeye, AI-based policing initiatives, the Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), EAGLE and the Forensic Science Laboratory.

Narcotics and Organised Crime Under Focus

The increase in narcotics and organised crime cases was among the areas requiring greater attention.

Narcotics cases increased by 46.10 per cent over the period under review, while organised crime cases rose from 25 to 451. The review called for closer analysis of crime patterns and stronger action based on the profile of individual police units.

At the same time, the decline in grave crimes, cybercrime and economic offences was also noted during the review.

Senior IPS Officers Attend Review

Senior IPS officers, including Mahesh Bhagwat (IPS: 1995: Telangana), Shikha Goel (IPS: 1994: Telangana), and Charu Sinha (IPS: 1996: Telangana), who held several key policing assignments in the state and elsewhere.

Sandeep Shandilya (IPS: 1993: Telangana), a former senior police officer, also attended the meeting, along with police commissioners and district superintendents of police.

The review emphasised translating crime data and inspection findings into timely field-level action, with policing priorities tailored to the crime profile of individual districts and units.
