With El Niño conditions raising the possibility of uneven and below-normal rainfall, Telangana Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju has instructed district collectors to draw up district-specific crop contingency plans to safeguard agriculture and minimise the impact on farmers.
During a video conference with district collectors on Saturday, Jaju reviewed the state’s preparedness across agriculture, public health, drinking water and education. He emphasised the need for coordinated efforts among departments to address challenges that may arise due to changing weather conditions.
District-Wise Plans for Agriculture
The Chief Secretary directed district administrations to stay alert in areas that may experience rainfall shortages and prepare contingency strategies suited to local conditions. He asked officials to closely monitor the supply and distribution of certified seeds and fertilisers so that farmers have timely access to essential agricultural inputs.
Jaju also highlighted the importance of crop diversification, encouraging districts to promote alternative crops based on their agro-climatic conditions. According to him, diversifying cultivation can help reduce risks associated with erratic rainfall while improving farm productivity and income.
Health Departments Asked to Intensify Preventive Measures
Reviewing public health preparedness, Jaju called for close coordination between the Health, Panchayat Raj, Municipal Administration, Rural Water Supply and other concerned departments to curb the spread of seasonal diseases.
He instructed officials to strengthen sanitation drives, undertake vector-control activities and conduct awareness campaigns to keep communities informed about preventive measures. He also asked district collectors to keep a close watch on electricity supply, considering the challenges that changing weather conditions may pose.
Focus on Safe Drinking Water Supply
The Chief Secretary stressed that uninterrupted access to safe drinking water should remain a priority throughout the season. He directed officials to regularly monitor water availability in both rural and urban areas and respond swiftly wherever shortages are anticipated.
The review meeting underlined the state’s focus on ensuring preparedness across key sectors so that any adverse impact of El Niño-related weather conditions can be managed effectively while protecting farmers and maintaining essential public services.
