Hyderabad: Telangana Police has achieved estimated savings of around ₹90 crore through a manpower and resource rationalisation exercise, including the redeployment of personnel from VIP security duties and restructuring of specialised units.
Director General of Police C.V. Anand, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Telangana cadre, reviewed the measures during a staff officers’ meeting and said the exercise was aimed at aligning police resources with current operational requirements.
376 Personnel Withdrawn From Excess VIP Security
As part of the restructuring, 376 police personnel who had been deployed for the security of VIPs, including retired senior IPS officers, were withdrawn from those assignments.

The personnel are being made available for deployment in other areas where additional manpower is required. The department has also reviewed its vehicle requirements for VIP security.
The department also made 103 vehicles available by withdrawing:
- 20 bullet-proof vehicles
- 7 Toyota Fortuners
- 18 Innova Crystas
- 58 other four-wheelers
₹28.16 Crore Saved Through Allowance Rationalisation
The restructuring of the Greyhounds and OCTOPUS units included withdrawal of a 60% additional allowance previously paid to 573 personnel.
According to the DGP, this measure alone resulted in an estimated saving of ₹28.16 crore. The affected personnel have been redistributed to other police requirements, including departments such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau, CID, Narcotics, Cyber Security, Vigilance and Enforcement, and Traffic and Road Safety.
The wider restructuring of the specialised units is linked to changes in the state’s security requirements, with personnel being assessed and redeployed according to operational needs.
Police Manpower to Be Matched With Current Requirements
Anand also said the department was examining the rationalisation of its 93,000 sanctioned police strength according to present-day requirements.
The exercise is intended to ensure that personnel are distributed according to operational needs rather than maintaining identical staffing patterns across areas with different requirements.
The DGP also reviewed other administrative issues, including vacancies at senior ranks, promotions, recruitment, welfare measures and the reorganisation of police commissionerates.
Southern States DGP Conference in Hyderabad
The meeting also reviewed preparations for the regional conference of DGPs from southern states, scheduled to be held in Hyderabad in October.
The conference is expected to discuss issues including cybercrime, drug trafficking, Left-Wing Extremism, organised crime, coastal security and emerging crime trends.
The department also discussed the statewide rollout of the Fit Cop programme, aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of police personnel.
The rationalisation exercise comes as Telangana Police seeks to redistribute manpower, specialised personnel and other resources according to changing security and policing requirements.
