Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government is preparing a major infrastructure push under its State Capital Region (SCR) development plan, aimed at transforming connectivity around Lucknow on the lines of the National Capital Region (NCR). The ambitious project includes a 6-lane circular expressway connecting six key districts to improve regional mobility and reduce traffic congestion.
State Capital Region Project to Connect Six Districts
Under the “Rajya Rajdhani Mala” initiative, the state plans to link:
- Lucknow
- Barabanki
- Unnao
- Raebareli
- Hardoi
- Sitapur
The proposed circular expressway will be developed using a brownfield model, meaning existing roads will be upgraded and widened into a modern expressway network.
A high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Secretary is expected to approve key SCR projects, including this expressway plan.
Two-Phase Development Plan for Circular Expressway
The project will be executed in two phases:
Phase 1: 105 km Corridor
- Route: Lalganj – Raebareli – Haidergarh – Barabanki
- Estimated cost: ₹2,100 crore
- Completion timeline: 5 years
Phase 2: 195 km Corridor
- Route: Barabanki – Biswan – Sitapur – Hardoi – Sandila
- Estimated cost: ₹3,900 crore
- Completion timeline: 10 years
The total project is expected to significantly improve inter-district connectivity in the region.
Big Relief from Traffic Congestion in Lucknow
A key objective of the circular expressway is to reduce the growing traffic pressure in Lucknow city.
Currently, vehicles from surrounding districts pass through the city center, leading to frequent congestion. The new expressway will provide an alternative high-speed route, easing traffic flow and reducing travel time within urban areas.
Boost to Economic Growth and Employment
Beyond improving connectivity, the project is expected to drive regional economic development.
Planned along the expressway corridor are:
- Industrial clusters
- Logistics parks
- Warehousing hubs
- Residential developments
These developments are expected to attract investment and generate new employment opportunities across the region.
Uttar Pradesh’s Vision for Modern Urban Connectivity
The State Capital Region initiative reflects Uttar Pradesh’s broader vision of building modern, well-connected urban infrastructure. The circular expressway is expected to become a key backbone for economic and regional development in central Uttar Pradesh.
