Dehradun: Uttarakhand is set to get its first-ever construction and demolition (C&D) waste processing facility at Mothrowala in Dehradun. Officials from the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) confirmed that land has been secured and environmental clearance has been obtained for the project.
Pollution Control Approval and Tendering Underway
Deputy Municipal Commissioner Tanvir Marwah stated that the Pollution Control Board has approved the site for the project. He added that the tendering process is currently in progress.
According to officials, the project is expected to be completed within a minimum timeframe of four months once work begins.
Waste Processing Facility Under NCAP Initiative
The facility was originally announced in 2024 under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Once operational, it will process construction debris into reusable materials such as bricks and blocks.
The primary objective of the project is to reduce dust pollution in the city and promote sustainable waste management practices.
Current Construction Waste Handling in Dehradun
At present, the municipal corporation collects around 150 metric tonnes of construction waste every month. Officials confirmed that this waste is currently being dumped at the designated site where the processing plant will be established.
Authorities explained that since the plant will eventually process the debris at the same location, the area is being used for controlled dumping in the interim.
Rising Concerns Over Improper Debris Disposal
Residents have raised concerns over the growing problem of improper construction waste disposal across the city.
Local resident Pooja Thakur from Yamuna Colony said debris is often dumped on sidewalks and streets, blocking pedestrian movement and sometimes entering drainage systems ahead of the monsoon season.
Another resident, Naveen Chaudhary from Mokhampur, highlighted environmental concerns, stating that unmanaged construction waste pollutes water bodies, mixes with household garbage, and poses risks to animals that scavenge through waste.
Step Toward Cleaner and Sustainable Dehradun
Officials believe the upcoming C&D waste processing plant will play a crucial role in improving urban cleanliness and reducing environmental pollution. The initiative is expected to strengthen Dehradun’s waste management system and support the city’s long-term sustainability goals.
