New Delhi: In a powerful testament to police bravery and operational precision, IPS officer Vidit Raj Bhundesh of the West Bengal cadre has been conferred with the Shaurya Padak on Independence Day 2025, three years after he led a dramatic rescue and takedown operation during an armed robbery attempt in Chandannagar, West Bengal.
The 2021 Robbery: High-Tech Criminals Target Fintech Branch
In November 2021, four armed criminals equipped with automatic firearms and signal jammers stormed a fintech firm’s local branch in Chandannagar. Their plan: a swift and brutal robbery, aided by network blockers to disable communication and hold staff and customers hostage at gunpoint.
The robbers assaulted a resisting customer, causing a head injury, and instilled panic within the premises.
Alarm Raised, Police Spring Into Action
Despite their tactics, a quick-thinking staff member managed to press an emergency alarm. The signal reached the firm’s security control room in Visakhapatnam, which alerted local law enforcement.
Responding swiftly, SP Vidit Raj Bhundesh led his team to the location. As police arrived, the robbers opened fire. In a 15-minute high-risk encounter, three of the four assailants were arrested. One escaped, but the building was secured, hostages were rescued, and injured civilians rushed to safety.
Weapons and Cash Recovered; Quick Conviction Ensued
From the scene, the police recovered:
- Three automatic weapons
- Network jammers
- Cash and gold looted during the heist
Within two years, the arrested accused were convicted, marking one of the swiftest turnarounds in such complex cases. Investigations later revealed their involvement in multiple robberies and murders.
Recognition for Exemplary Service
Currently serving as Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department) in Kolkata Police, Mr. Bhundesh’s contribution has been formally recognized with the Shaurya Padak, a gallantry award for police personnel demonstrating exceptional courage and overall commendable service.
