Patna: The Vikramshila Setu, a key bridge connecting northern and southern Bihar and serving as a vital lifeline for millions, is expected to partially reopen to traffic by June 7 following urgent repair and strengthening works. Authorities have confirmed that the installation of a fourth Bailey bridge has begun and is expected to be completed by June 4, paving the way for the resumption of controlled vehicular movement.

Fourth Bailey Bridge Installation Underway

According to officials from the Road Construction Department (RCD) and the Bihar Rajya Pul Nirman Nigam Limited (BRPNNL), the launching of the fourth Bailey bridge started on Wednesday and is progressing rapidly.

  • The installation work is expected to be completed by June 4
  • After installation, approach ramps will be constructed within two days
  • Final safety checks and technical testing will be conducted before opening the bridge to traffic

Officials said that the repair and reinforcement work is being carried out based on recommendations from a technical audit team to ensure structural safety and long-term durability.

Controlled Traffic Movement from June 7

The bridge is likely to be reopened for vehicular movement in a phased and controlled manner by June 7, subject to safety clearance.

Key traffic rules after reopening:

  • Only light vehicles will be allowed initially
  • Permitted vehicles include:
    • Motorcycles
    • Auto-rickshaws
    • Ambulances
    • Other light four-wheelers
  • Heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks will remain restricted

To regulate traffic flow, authorities will set up check posts on both ends of the bridge.

One-Way Traffic System for Safety

To ensure safety during the initial phase of reopening, the administration has decided to implement a one-way traffic system on the bridge.

Officials emphasized that the decision has been taken to reduce load pressure on the repaired structure and allow smooth monitoring of vehicular movement.

Strengthening and Safety Measures

In addition to installing the Bailey bridge, several technical and safety upgrades are being carried out, including:

  • Construction of approach ramps for smooth entry and exit
  • Technical inspection and correction of bridge angles
  • Installation of control cabins
  • Road lining and marking work
  • Implementation of single-lane monitoring systems

Senior engineers from the RCD, BRPNNL, and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working round the clock to expedite completion.

Continuous Monitoring by Senior Officials

Senior officials from the state’s road construction department are continuously monitoring the repair work and issuing instructions to ensure timely completion.

The administration has reiterated that safety remains the top priority before restoring full traffic operations on the bridge.

Importance of Vikramshila Setu

Vikramshila Setu plays a crucial role in connecting key regions of Bihar, especially facilitating movement between northern and southern districts. The partial closure had significantly affected daily commuters and freight movement, making its timely restoration a high priority for the state government.
