New Delhi: In a significant diplomatic appointment, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has named senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer Vishvas Vidu Sapkal as India’s next Ambassador to the Slovak Republic. A 1998-batch IFS officer with extensive experience across Europe, Latin America, the Pacific region, and multilateral diplomacy, Sapkal is currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Peru and is expected to assume his new assignment in Slovakia shortly. This appointment marks another important diplomatic responsibility in his distinguished career spanning more than two decades.
The announcement was made through an official statement issued by the MEA on Saturday.
“Vishvas Vidu Sapkal (IFS: 1998), presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Peru, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Slovak Republic. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” the ministry said.
The appointment comes at a time when India continues to deepen its engagement with Central and Eastern European countries while expanding strategic, economic and cultural ties across the European region.
A Veteran Diplomat with Global Experience
Mr Sapkal belongs to the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service and is regarded as one of India’s experienced career diplomats. Over the years, he has represented India in several important diplomatic missions across Europe, Latin America, the Pacific region, Africa and North America.
Currently serving as India’s Ambassador to Peru, Sapkal assumed charge in Lima on June 30, 2023. He was subsequently accredited as Ambassador to Bolivia, further strengthening India’s diplomatic outreach in Latin America.
Throughout his diplomatic career, he has handled a diverse range of bilateral, regional and multilateral assignments, making him one of the more versatile officers in the Indian foreign service establishment.

Educational Background
Sapkal holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electronics from Walchand Engineering College, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, Maharashtra.
Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, he built professional experience in academia, engineering and public communication.
He worked as:
- Lecturer at PVPIT Engineering College, Budhgaon, Sangli, Maharashtra
- Lecturer at Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli
- Engineer at Maharashtra Electronics Corporation (MELTRON), Nagpur
- Officer in the Indian Information Service (IIS)
His multidisciplinary background provided a strong foundation before entering India’s premier diplomatic service.
Key Diplomatic Assignments
Ambassador to Peru and Bolivia
Sapkal has been serving as India’s Ambassador to Peru since June 2023. Soon after assuming office, he was also concurrently accredited as Ambassador to Bolivia.
His tenure has focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, mining, technology, education and cultural exchanges between India and Latin American nations.
High Commissioner to Fiji and Pacific Island Nations
One of the most notable chapters of his diplomatic career came when he served as India’s High Commissioner to Fiji.
During this period, he simultaneously represented India in several Pacific Island nations, including:
- Cook Islands
- Kiribati
- Nauru
- Tonga
- Tuvalu
- Vanuatu
The assignment was particularly significant as India intensified its engagement with Pacific Island countries through development partnerships and strategic cooperation.
Consul General in Russia
Sapkal also served as Consul General of India in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he played an important role in strengthening India-Russia bilateral relations.

Joint Secretary (BIMSTEC, SAARC and Nalanda)
Between May and November 2019, Sapkal served as Joint Secretary handling regional cooperation initiatives involving BIMSTEC, SAARC and the Nalanda project.
Joint Secretary (South)
From November 2019 to June 2023, he served as Joint Secretary (South), overseeing critical diplomatic engagements and policy coordination.
Joint Secretary (Indo-Pacific)
He also briefly handled the strategically important Indo-Pacific portfolio as Joint Secretary from August 2021 to January 2022.
Role in Major International Events
Beyond traditional diplomatic assignments, Sapkal has played important roles in several flagship international events hosted or supported by India.
India-Africa Forum Summit 2015
He served as Director for the India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS), one of India’s largest diplomatic engagements with African nations.
World Hindi Conference 2023
As Chief Coordinator, Sapkal played a central role in organizing the 12th World Hindi Conference held in Fiji in February 2023.
FIPIC Summit in Papua New Guinea
He also served as Chief Liaison Officer during the Third Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) held in Papua New Guinea in May 2023.
The summit was a major milestone in India’s outreach to Pacific Island nations.
Strengthening India-Slovakia Relations
With his appointment to Slovakia, Sapkal is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations between India and the Central European nation.
