West Bengal: The Ministry of Railways has approved three major railway projects aimed at strengthening connectivity, improving passenger convenience, and expanding rail infrastructure in West Bengal.

The approvals include a new rail line, a long-distance express train service, and a third-line project to ease traffic congestion.

New Rail Line and Capacity Expansion in North Bengal

One of the key approvals is a new rail line between New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri Junction.

Key developments include:

  • New Jalpaiguri–Siliguri rail line project approved
  • Survey cleared for double-line feasibility in the region
  • Aim to reduce congestion and improve train frequency

The project is expected to significantly improve rail movement in North Bengal, where traffic pressure has been rising steadily.

Santragachi–Jaipur Express Train Gets Green Signal

A new long-distance express train will operate between Santragachi and Jaipur (Khatipura), passing through Kharagpur.

Benefits of the new service:

  • Improved connectivity between West Bengal and Rajasthan
  • Reduced need for train changes during long journeys
  • Easier travel for passengers on inter-state routes

The new service is expected to enhance passenger convenience on a high-demand corridor.

Shalboni–Adra Third Line Project Approved

The biggest approval is the Shalboni–Adra third railway line project spanning around 107 km.

Highlights:

  • Final Location Survey (FLS) approved
  • Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation to begin
  • Expected to improve freight and passenger movement

The project will strengthen rail capacity and improve operational efficiency in the region.

Additional Surveys for Future Expansion

The ministry has also approved feasibility studies and surveys for several other routes, including:

  • Contai–Jhargram new rail line feasibility study
  • Tamluk–Digha rail line survey (approx. 107 km)
  • Digha–Tajpur line feasibility survey (7.15 km)

These projects aim to expand coastal and regional rail connectivity.

Improved Connectivity and Economic Impact Expected

Officials believe these projects will:

  • Improve regional connectivity
  • Reduce travel time and congestion
  • Support freight movement
  • Boost economic activity in connected regions

Political Context Around Railway Approvals

The approvals have also sparked political discussions, with observers linking faster project clearances to improved coordination between the Centre and the state.

Several long-pending railway proposals in the region are now expected to move forward more quickly.

The railway approvals mark a significant push toward infrastructure development in West Bengal, with a focus on improving connectivity, easing congestion, and expanding rail capacity across key routes.
