On World Snake Day, 2023 members of the wildlife rescue team of Chennai Forest Division that rescues 4,000 snakes annually were felicitated at an event organised by Wildlife Portal of India, a city based forum involved in wildlife conservation.
IFS officer E Prasanth, who is the wildlife warden of Chennai, felicitated C. Kali, his wife K. Alamelu D. Ramesh from the Irula community for their work in rescuing snakes.
The IFS officer tweeted, “Felicitating the real hero’s of snake conservation in Chennai. Forest Department and Irula Snake Rescuers who protect and save thousands of snakes in Chennai city from being killed by taking them to safer places. #TNforest #WorldSnakeDay”
He further wrote, “TNFD has last year established a first in a kind Urban Wildlife Rescue centre in Guindy National Park which helps treat the injured wildlife. Last year alone 200+ wildlife lives were saved and given second lease of life.”
