With an illustrious career spanning three decades, Vidyavathi’s commitment to sustainability, heritage preservation, and community empowerment has made her a beacon of innovation in public administration. Her journey from an IAS officer of the Karnataka cadre to spearheading India’s global tourism initiatives is nothing short of inspirational.

THE APPOINTMENT THAT REDEFINED TOURISM LEADERSHIP

When V. Vidyavathi assumed the role of Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, in June 2023, the challenges were formidable. Tourism was still recovering from the aftershocks of the pandemic, and India’s vast potential as a global destination awaited strategic direction. Undeterred, Ms. Vidyavathi took charge with characteristic determination, quickly setting a precedent for efficiency and innovation.

Her leadership became evident when India hosted the G20 Tourism Working Group meetings and the Tourism Ministerial Meeting across iconic locations, including the Rann of Kutch, Siliguri, Srinagar, and Panaji. These events, which highlighted green tourism, digitalisation, and inclusive development, were flawlessly executed, earning accolades from global stakeholders. The successful endorsement of the Goa Roadmap and the launch of the “Travel for LiFE” initiative showcased her ability to navigate complex international platforms with ease.

THE ROLE OF A TOURISM SECRETARY
