The Raging Sting: How IPS Officer Mayur Chawda Cracked a 2 Crore Drug Cartel in a Daring Multi-City Bust

A whisper of betrayal, a factory of secrets, and a ₹2 crore storm—IPS Mayur Chawda leads a pulse-pounding raid unraveling a sprawling drug empire.

In a nerve-wracking operation that felt like a page out of a crime thriller, IPS officer Mayur Chawda, a 2013-batch Gujarat cadre officer and the current Superintendent of Police in Bharuch, spearheaded a meticulously planned raid that unraveled a massive drug racket. With over ₹2 crore worth of MD (Methylenedioxy-methamphetamine) drugs seized and four individuals apprehended, the operation spanned Surat and Ankleshwar, laying bare the sinister workings of a narcotics network with links to major cities like Mumbai.

“This operation was a message to drug networks—we will leave no stone unturned in uprooting their operations,” said Chawda, reflecting on the high-stakes mission. “The scale of the recovery highlights the gravity of the situation, but it also shows what’s possible with teamwork and precise intelligence.”

In an exclusive conversation with Indian Masterminds, the officer shared details about the thrilling bust.

THE TIP-OFF: A WHISPER IN THE SHADOWS

The operation began with a whisper—a tip-off from an informant about a shadowy network transporting MD drugs through Surat. The information pointed to a factory in Ankleshwar GIDC (Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation) named Avsar Enterprise, suspected of being the hub for manufacturing and distributing narcotics. Vishal Patel, Montu Patel, Virat Patel, and Vipul Patel surfaced as key players in this nefarious game.

Recognizing the magnitude of the situation, SP Chawda immediately activated a joint task force comprising the Surat Crime Branch, Surat Rural Special Operations Group (S.O.G.), and Bharuch S.O.G. The stage was set for a gripping, multi-pronged raid.

“We knew the stakes were high. The challenge was to act quickly while maintaining utmost secrecy to ensure we caught them red-handed,” he told Indian Masterminds.

ACT I: THE CHASE AT VELANJA VILLAGE

The operation’s first breakthrough came near Rangoli Chokdi in Velanja village, Surat. Acting on intelligence that the suspects were transporting drugs, the task force intercepted a Skoda Slavia with three men—Montu Patel, Virat Patel, and Vipul Patel—inside.

It was a tense standoff as officers moved in, their every move calculated. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed over 2 kilograms of MD drugs, neatly packed and ready for distribution. The seizure was valued at a staggering ₹2.03 crore. Alongside the drugs, cash, mobile phones, and the vehicle itself were confiscated.

The suspects, visibly rattled, were taken into custody. Their preliminary interrogation hinted at a larger operation, leading the team to prepare for the second act—an explosive raid in Ankleshwar.

ACT II: THE FACTORY OF SECRETS

As the task force descended upon Avsar Enterprise in Ankleshwar GIDC, the air was thick with anticipation. The factory, an unassuming industrial unit, concealed a sinister secret. Inside, officers discovered a sophisticated setup for manufacturing MD drugs.

The raid yielded 141 grams of MD drugs, valued at ₹14.1 lakh, and a staggering 503 kilograms of suspicious narcotics awaiting forensic analysis. Vishal Patel, the factory’s owner, was arrested on-site. His operation was meticulous—chemicals sourced under pretenses, production hidden behind legitimate business activities, and a well-oiled distribution network spanning Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The chilling part? The suspects confessed to moving drugs to Mumbai through similar channels multiple times before their luck ran out.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Interrogations revealed a web of connections leading to Mumbai-based distributors and other accomplices. The drugs, primarily MD, were meant for high-end parties and clandestine sales in metropolitan cities. The bust not only disrupted the immediate network but also hinted at a larger syndicate, prompting ongoing investigations.

Forensic teams were called in to analyze the seized 503 kilograms of suspicious substances, believed to include precursors for MD drugs. Meanwhile, the task force expanded its probe to trace financial transactions and identify the suppliers of the raw materials used in production.

A CALCULATED RISK, A REWARDING OUTCOME

The success of the operation was no accident. From setting up surveillance to coordinating simultaneous raids across districts, every move was meticulously planned. The element of surprise was critical, ensuring the suspects had no chance to destroy evidence or flee.

“The credit goes to my team,” Chawda said, emphasizing the collective effort. “When we executed the raid, we knew we were putting ourselves at risk, but the safety of our communities depends on taking that risk.”

THE HAUL: SEIZED EVIDENCE

  • Velanja Village Seizure:
    • MD Drugs: 2.031 kg (₹2.03 crore)
    • Cash: ₹32,800
    • Vehicle: Skoda Slavia (₹12 lakh)
    • Mobile Phones: 4 units
    • Total: ₹2.16 crore
  • Ankleshwar GIDC Factory:
    • MD Drugs: 141 grams (₹14.1 lakh)
    • Suspicious Substances: 503 kg (value pending analysis)
    • Total: ₹14.1 lakh (confirmed)

COMMUNITY’S HOPE

The bust was more than a victory for law enforcement—it was a ray of hope for the communities affected by the drug menace. Residents of Surat and Bharuch, who had long been grappling with the growing infiltration of narcotics, hailed the efforts of SP Mayur Chawda and his team.

As the investigation deepens, the message is clear: drug traffickers will find no haven in Gujarat. The operation has not only disrupted a major network but also set the tone for future crackdowns. For SP Mayur Chawda, this is just the beginning of a relentless fight against the shadows.
